Loop
“Slip through Cantwell’s cool sandstone slots to airy rim peeks—easygoing, yet watchful on slick rock.”
This short loop-style outing in Hocking Hills State Park is all about weaving through a tight maze of Blackhand sandstone cliffs, slot-like passages, and shaded hemlock-and-hardwood forest, with constant scenery for very little effort. Even though the overall elevation change is minimal, expect frequent small ups and downs as the path threads between rock walls and around cliff edges.
Distance & effort - Distance: ~2 km (1.2 mi) - Elevation gain: ~0 m (0 ft) overall, but with minor rolling undulations and a few short stair/rock-step sections - Difficulty: Easy (good for most fitness levels; footing is the main challenge after rain)
Where the hike starts (nearest landmark / address)
The usual starting point is the Cantwell Cliffs parking area in Hocking Hills State Park, near Rockbridge, Ohio. The closest widely used landmark-style address is:
- Cantwell Cliffs Parking Area, Hocking Hills State Park, Rockbridge, OH 43149
(If you’re entering it into navigation, searching “Cantwell Cliffs parking” is typically more reliable than a street number in this part of the park.)
By car - From the Logan, OH area, you’ll generally approach via the Hocking Hills park road network toward Cantwell Cliffs. Roads are paved, but can be narrow and busy on weekends. - Parking is at the signed Cantwell Cliffs lot. Arrive early on peak fall color weekends—this is one of the park’s most popular short hikes.
By public transport - There is no practical direct public transit to this trailhead. The closest services are in Columbus, OH (regional buses/airport), but you’ll still need a rental car or rideshare to reach Rockbridge and the park. Cell coverage can be inconsistent in the hills, so plan rides in advance.
From the parking area, the path quickly drops into the forest and begins a gentle, winding approach to the cliff system. The “easy” rating comes from the short distance and limited sustained climbing, but the trail surface varies: - Packed dirt and leaf litter in the woods - Sandstone steps and rocky pinch points near the cliffs - Occasional mud and slick rock after rain or during freeze–thaw cycles
Plan on moving slower than the distance suggests—there are many natural “stop-and-look” moments, and some sections are naturally single-file.
The signature experience here is the contrast between cool, shaded corridors and open rim-edge viewpoints.
Because the loop is compact, you’ll often be within a few hundred meters of the parking area, but the terrain feels surprisingly wild once you’re among the rock walls.
This part of Hocking Hills is a classic mixed hardwood forest with a strong “rockhouse” microclimate near the cliffs.
Even on an easy hike, this trail has a few consistent “gotchas”: - Slippery sandstone: Wet rock can be slick. Shoes with decent tread help more than trekking poles here. - Cliff edges: Some overlooks are natural and unfenced. Wind, wet leaves, and distraction from photos are the usual culprits—stay back from the edge. - Crowds: The narrow passages can bottleneck. If you want a quieter walk, aim for weekday mornings. - Seasonal conditions: In winter, shaded sections can hold ice long after sunny areas melt. In summer, the ravines stay cooler, but humidity can be high.
For navigation, the junctions are generally straightforward, but it’s still smart to have the route downloaded in HiiKER in case you want to confirm you’re staying on the rim segment versus the lower corridor segment.
