This route makes a relaxed, mostly low-stress circuit around the wooded shorelines and coves of William H. Harsha Lake, linking sections of the Backpack Trail through a mix of lakeside singletrack, gentle ridge-and-hollow terrain, and short connector stretches near recreation areas. At roughly 22 km (13.7 mi) with about 300 m (985 ft) of total climbing, it’s well-suited to newer hikers, families with older kids, and anyone wanting a long-but-not-steep day where the main challenges are pacing, footing after rain, and staying oriented at junctions.
Nearest significant landmark for the trailhead area: the main access points for the Backpack Trail are within East Fork State Park on the east side of Cincinnati, centered around the William H. Harsha Lake / East Fork Lake recreation complex near Bethel, Ohio. A practical “aim point” for navigation is the East Fork State Park main entrance / park roads leading toward the lake’s primary day-use areas and trail parking (the Backpack Trail is typically signed from park trailheads and interior junctions).

As you work along the shoreline, expect repeated transitions between: - Lakeside benches (flatter, sometimes narrower tread with roots) - Low ridges (slightly drier footing, more leaf litter) - Shallow hollows and creeklets (muddy after rain; watch for slick clay)
The lake itself is the dominant landmark. You’ll pass a sequence of coves and inlets where the trail bends inland and then returns to water views. In calmer sections, the water can be glassy and quiet; in windier weather, exposed banks can feel noticeably cooler—bring a light layer even on warm days if you tend to chill when you stop.

Footing hazards - Roots + wet leaves: Common in Ohio hardwood forest. Step deliberately on angled roots; they can be as slick as ice when damp. - Mud and clay: After rain, some low spots hold water. If you detour around mud, avoid widening the trail—look for durable surfaces (rocks/firm ground) rather than trampling vegetation. - Ticks and poison ivy: Expect both in warm months. Long socks and a quick tick check at breaks help a lot.
East Fork State Park sits in a classic southwestern Ohio mix of oak-hickory hardwoods, understory shrubs, and edge habitat near the lake.
