This medium-difficulty trail is perfect for those looking to experience the beauty of the Blue Ridge Mountains.

Getting There

To reach the trailhead, you can drive or use public transport. If driving, head towards Gerton, NC, and look for Bearwallow Mountain Road. The trailhead is located near the intersection of Bearwallow Mountain Road and US-74A. For those using public transport, the nearest significant landmark is the town of Hendersonville, NC. From there, you can take a local taxi or rideshare service to the trailhead.

Trail Overview

The loop begins with a gentle ascent through a lush forest, offering a mix of hardwoods and evergreens. As you progress, the trail becomes steeper, leading you to Bearwallow Mountain's summit. At approximately 2 km (1.2 miles) into the hike, you'll reach the open, grassy summit of Bearwallow Mountain, sitting at an elevation of 1,230 meters (4,035 feet). Here, you'll be rewarded with panoramic views of the surrounding Blue Ridge Mountains and, on clear days, even the distant peaks of the Great Smoky Mountains.

Wildlife and Flora

The area is rich in biodiversity. Keep an eye out for white-tailed deer, wild turkeys, and various bird species such as the Eastern Bluebird and Red-tailed Hawk. The flora is equally impressive, with rhododendrons, mountain laurels, and wildflowers dotting the landscape, especially vibrant in spring and early summer.

Historical Significance

Bearwallow Mountain has a rich history, once serving as grazing land for livestock. The open summit is a remnant of this past, maintained through periodic mowing to preserve the grassy bald. The region also has historical ties to early settlers and Native American tribes, who used these trails for hunting and trading.

Wildcat Rock Trail

Continuing from Bearwallow Mountain, the trail descends into a dense forest, leading you towards Wildcat Rock. This section is more rugged, with rocky outcrops and steeper inclines. At around the 5 km (3.1 miles) mark, you'll encounter Wildcat Rock, a prominent granite outcrop offering stunning views of the Hickory Nut Gorge and the surrounding valleys. This is a perfect spot for a break and some photography.

Navigation and Safety

Given the trail's moderate difficulty, it's advisable to use a reliable navigation tool like HiiKER to stay on track. The trail is well-marked, but having a digital map can be invaluable, especially in foggy or low-visibility conditions. Always carry sufficient water, snacks, and a first-aid kit. Weather can change rapidly in the mountains, so layers and rain gear are recommended.

Final Stretch

The final leg of the loop takes you through a series of switchbacks and gentle descents, eventually bringing you back to the trailhead. This section is less strenuous, allowing you to enjoy the serene forest and perhaps spot some more wildlife.

This trail offers a perfect blend of natural beauty, historical significance, and moderate physical challenge, making it a must-visit for any hiking enthusiast.
