Out and Back
“Follow a gentle riverside path to Rochester’s roaring High Falls, where city grit meets misty wonder.”
A short, mostly level riverside walk leads you to one of the most dramatic urban waterfalls in the U.S.: High Falls on the Genesee River. At roughly 1 km (0.6 mi) round trip with about 0 m (0 ft) of elevation gain, this is an easy outing that still delivers big scenery—especially when the river is running high.
Nearest well-known start area: the High Falls District / Genesee Riverway Trail access near High Falls Terrace and State Street, Rochester, NY (by the High Falls overlook and pedestrian paths along the gorge).
Expect paved and/or well-compacted multi-use path typical of the Genesee Riverway Trail through the High Falls area, with short connectors to overlooks. Because the route is short and flat, most hikers will cover the walking portion in 15–30 minutes, but many people spend longer lingering at viewpoints.
Even though the elevation change is minimal, the gorge edge and overlooks make this feel more “serious” than the stats suggest—plan on moving slowly near railings and viewpoint crowds.
From the High Falls District access near High Falls Terrace, follow the Genesee Riverway Trail toward the gorge viewpoints.
If you’re using a navigation app, load the route on HiiKER and keep an eye on which overlook spur you’re aiming for—there are several short connectors and it’s easy to wander into a longer downtown stroll if you keep following the river trail.
High Falls exists because the Genesee River cuts through layers of bedrock that erode at different rates, creating a hard “lip” and a steep drop. The gorge walls and the river’s confined channel amplify the sound and spray, especially after rain or during spring runoff.
Historically, this waterfall was a major reason Rochester became an early industrial hub—water power supported mills and manufacturing, and the river corridor became a working landscape. The surrounding High Falls District still reflects that legacy in its bridges, old industrial footprints, and the way the city is built right up to the gorge edge.
Despite the urban setting, the river corridor can be lively: - Birds: Gulls, cormorants, and seasonal migrants often patrol the river. In warmer months, you may see swallows and other insect-eaters working the air above the water. - River life: Fish activity is sometimes visible from overlooks when water clarity allows, though turbulence near the falls can obscure views. - Plants: Expect hardy riparian vegetation and landscaped plantings near developed viewpoints; in spring and summer, greenery softens the industrial edges.
If you share where you’re coming from (or a lon/lat point for the trailhead you had in mind), I can pin the nearest specific intersection/landmark more precisely and tailor the best parking and transit stop options to that exact start.
