Loop
“From swampy hush to rocky ridge, the loop ends beside Ghost Lake’s dark, watchful calm.”
This medium loop is a varied sampler of Jenny Jump State Forest: a quick warm-up through low, damp woodland, a steady climb onto Jenny Jump Mountain’s rocky spine, and a quieter finish past the dark, still water of Ghost Lake. At roughly 8 km (5.0 mi) with about 200 m (656 ft) of total ascent, it’s long enough to feel like a “real hike,” but short enough to fit into a half-day with time for breaks and wildlife watching.
By car: Aim for Jenny Jump State Forest / Ghost Lake area in Hope Township, Warren County, New Jersey. The most practical target landmark for navigation is Ghost Lake, within Jenny Jump State Forest. Parking is typically at or near forest access pull-offs/parking areas serving the Ghost Lake/Jenny Jump trail network. Cell service can be inconsistent in the forest, so it’s worth loading the route in HiiKER before you arrive.
By public transport: Public transit to this part of Warren County is limited. The most workable approach is usually:
- Take rail/bus service toward Hackettstown, NJ (a common regional transit hub), then
- Use a rideshare/taxi for the final leg to Jenny Jump State Forest (Ghost Lake area).
If you’re trying to do this fully car-free, plan extra time and have a backup option for the return trip—rideshare availability can be spotty.
(If you share the exact start coordinates/lon-lat you’re using, I can pin it to the nearest specific parking area or signed forest access point.)
You’ll start on the Swamp Trail, which tends to be low-lying and moisture-prone. Expect: - Soft ground after rain, occasional standing water, and slick leaves in shoulder seasons - Short boardwalky/firm sections mixed with muddy patches (trail conditions vary a lot with recent weather) - A cooler, shaded feel—this area holds moisture and can stay damp even when nearby ridges are dry
As you transition toward the Ghost Lake Trail and begin gaining elevation, the tread usually firms up. The climb is not long, but it’s steady enough that you’ll notice it—think short ridge ascent rather than a mountain grind. Over the full hike, the 200 m (656 ft) gain is spread out in a way that keeps it “medium”: a few punchier bits, then easier cruising.
Wetland/lowland woods (early miles / first kilometres):
The swampy start is prime habitat for amphibians and wetland birds. In spring and early summer, listen for frogs and watch for:
- Wood frogs, spring peepers, and other chorus frogs
- Red-winged blackbirds and other edge-of-wetland species
- Dragonflies in warmer months
Ridge and rocky forest (mid-route):
Jenny Jump Mountain is part of New Jersey’s long Appalachian ridge-and-valley landscape. As you climb, the forest typically shifts to drier upland species and rockier footing. Look for:
- Rocky outcrops and scattered boulders
- A more open understory in places, especially where the ground is thin and stony
- Seasonal berries and mast (which can attract wildlife)
Ghost Lake (later portion):
Ghost Lake is the mood-setter: dark water, quiet shoreline, and a “tucked away” feel. It’s a good spot to slow down, snack, and scan the edges for movement. Depending on season and time of day, you may see:
- Turtles basking on logs
- Great blue herons or other waders
- Signs of beaver activity in the broader region (not guaranteed at the lake itself)
Trail junctions in state forests can be easy to miss when leaves are down or when blazes are faded. Use HiiKER to: - Confirm you’re on Swamp Trail early on (especially where side paths braid around wet spots) - Verify the correct turn onto/along Ghost Lake Trail - Keep an eye on your position near any multi-trail intersections around the lake and ridge
A practical tip: if the swampy section forces you onto a drier “social path” around mud, periodically check HiiKER to make sure you rejoin the official line rather than drifting onto a parallel track.
For most hikers, plan 2.5–4 hours depending on stops and trail conditions. The same route can feel very different based on recent rain: - After wet weather, the first part can slow you down significantly. - In a dry spell, it’s a smoother, faster loop with a pleasant mix of terrain.
