Hedgerow, South Creekside and Northern Hill Loop Trail

Nestled in the scenic Hunterdon County of New Jersey, the Hedgerow, South Creekside and Northern Hill Loop Trail offers a delightful 3 km (approximately 1.86 miles) journey through a variety of landscapes. With an elevation gain that is negligible, this loop trail is accessible from a trailhead conveniently located near the county's well-traveled roads.

Getting to the Trailhead

To reach the starting point of the Hedgerow, South Creekside and Northern Hill Loop Trail, hikers can drive and park at the designated area close to the intersection of County Road 519 and Oak Summit Road. For those opting for public transport, the nearest bus stops are typically within a few miles of the trailhead, so a taxi or bike ride might be necessary to cover the last stretch.

Trail Experience

Upon embarking on the trail, hikers are greeted by the dense hedgerows that give the trail part of its name. These living fences are a testament to the agricultural heritage of the region, often serving as property boundaries and windbreaks for the past centuries. The trail meanders alongside South Creek, where the gentle sounds of flowing water accompany hikers. This section, about 1 km (0.62 miles) in, is a haven for birdwatchers, with opportunities to spot kingfishers and herons.

Flora and Fauna

As the trail curves away from the creek, it enters a mixed hardwood forest. Here, the canopy provides a cool respite on warmer days. The forest floor is a mosaic of ferns and wildflowers, especially in the spring. Wildlife sightings may include white-tailed deer, foxes, and various small mammals. The diversity of birdlife continues with the possibility of hearing the distinct calls of woodpeckers and the sight of hawks circling overhead.

Historical Significance

The area surrounding the trail is steeped in history. Hunterdon County was established in the 18th century, and as hikers traverse the Northern Hill section of the loop, they walk paths that early settlers may have used. The region played a role during the Revolutionary War, and while the trail itself may not have significant historical landmarks, the surrounding area is rich with historical sites and traditional architecture.
