“Embark on a scenic adventure through history and wilderness on the Mount Paugus South Peak Loop.”
The Mount Paugus South Peak Loop via Ferncroft is a moderately challenging hike that spans approximately 12 kilometers (about 7.5 miles) with an elevation gain of around 700 meters (roughly 2300 feet). This loop trail is nestled in the White Mountains of New Hampshire, near Carroll County, and offers a blend of natural beauty, wildlife sightings, and a touch of historical significance.
Getting to the Trailhead To reach the trailhead, hikers can drive to Ferncroft, which is a well-known area near the small town of Wonalancet in Carroll County. There is a parking area at the end of Ferncroft Road, which serves as the starting point for several trails. Public transportation options are limited in this rural area, so arriving by car is the most feasible option. From the parking area, the trailhead is easily accessible.
The Hike The journey begins with a gentle ascent through a mixed hardwood forest, where the canopy of leaves provides shade and a cool environment during the warmer months. As you progress, the incline becomes more pronounced, and the forest transitions to include more coniferous trees, such as spruce and fir, which emit a fresh, piney scent.
Landmarks and Wildlife Approximately 3 kilometers (nearly 2 miles) into the hike, you'll encounter the Old Mast Road, a historic logging path that dates back to the colonial era when tall white pines were harvested as ship masts for the Royal Navy. This section of the trail offers a glimpse into the region's logging history.
Continuing the ascent, the trail becomes rockier and the sounds of civilization fade away, replaced by the calls of native birds. Keep an eye out for wildlife such as white-tailed deer, moose, and black bears, which are known to inhabit the White Mountains. Remember to keep a safe distance from any wildlife you encounter.
Summit and Views As you approach the South Peak of Mount Paugus, at around the 6-kilometer (3.7-mile) mark, the terrain becomes more challenging with some steep sections that may require careful footing. Upon reaching the summit, you are rewarded with panoramic views of the surrounding peaks and valleys. The sight of Mount Chocorua to the east is particularly striking.
Descent and Loop Completion The descent follows a different path, looping back towards the trailhead. This section can be steep at times, so trekking poles may be helpful for maintaining balance. The trail meanders through a series of small clearings and over babbling brooks, offering a different perspective of the landscape.
Preparation and Navigation Before setting out, ensure you have adequate water, snacks, and layers of clothing to adapt to changing weather conditions. The use of a navigation tool like HiiKER can help you stay on track, as the trail has several junctions where it's important to follow the correct path to complete the loop.
Conclusion The Mount Paugus South Peak Loop via Ferncroft is a rewarding hike that offers a moderate challenge and the opportunity to immerse oneself in the natural and historical richness of the White Mountains. Whether you're a seasoned hiker or someone looking to explore the beauty of New Hampshire's wilderness, this trail provides a memorable experience.
