Point-to-Point
“Wander from Zundert to Galder through flower-filled meadows, whispering woodlands, and golden heathlands.”
Starting near the charming town of Zundert, Netherlands, this 19 km (about 11.8 miles) point-to-point route offers a gentle, flat walk with virtually no elevation gain, making it accessible for most hikers. The trailhead is conveniently located close to the Zundert town center, which is easily reached by local bus services from Breda or Roosendaal, or by car with parking available near the main square.
Through De Beemden: Wetlands and Woodlands
The first section leads you out of Zundert, passing through quiet residential streets before quickly transitioning into the lush landscapes of De Beemden. This area is known for its low-lying meadows and wetlands, a haven for birdlife such as herons, storks, and various waterfowl. The flat terrain is interspersed with small streams and willow-lined ditches, typical of the Brabant countryside. In spring and early summer, wildflowers blanket the fields, and you may spot roe deer grazing at the forest edges.
Kerzelse Weg and Historical Context
At around the halfway mark, the route follows Kerzelse Weg, a rural lane bordered by old farmsteads and patches of woodland. This region has a rich agricultural history, with many farms dating back to the 18th and 19th centuries. The area around Zundert is also famous as the birthplace of Vincent van Gogh, and while the trail doesn’t pass directly by his childhood home, the influence of the landscape on his early work is evident in the scenery.
Approaching Galder: Heathlands and Village Charm
As you approach the final stretch, the landscape opens up into heathland and sandy paths, especially near the Galderse Heide. This nature reserve is a highlight for those interested in botany and birdwatching, with heather, gorse, and rare butterflies in late summer. The trail ends near the village of Galder, where you’ll find a few local cafés and the historic Galder church, a good spot to rest and reflect on the journey.
Navigation and Practical Tips
The entire route is well-marked, but for added confidence, use HiiKER for up-to-date trail maps and navigation. Public transport from Galder back to Zundert or Breda is available via local bus routes, though schedules may be limited on weekends. The flat terrain and well-maintained paths make this hike suitable for all fitness levels, and it’s especially enjoyable in spring and autumn when the countryside is at its most vibrant. Bring water and snacks, as services are limited between the villages.
