Trail Highlights

Zoetermeerse Plas

Begin your journey at the Zoetermeerse Plas, a 93-hectare lake formed through sand extraction for urban development. The lake reaches depths of up to 30 meters (98 feet), resulting in cooler surface temperatures due to underlying currents. The northern shore features a sandy beach with designated swimming areas, making it a popular spot for families. (routeyou.com)

Noordhovense Plas and Benthuizerplas

As you continue, you'll encounter the Noordhovense Plas and Benthuizerplas, smaller lakes of 20 and 25 hectares respectively. These shallow bodies, averaging around 2 meters (6.5 feet) in depth, were created to enhance local biodiversity and serve as natural water buffers. The surrounding areas are rich in birdlife, offering excellent opportunities for birdwatching. (zoetermeer.nl)

Prielenbos

Midway through the hike, consider a detour into the Prielenbos, a spontaneously developed marsh forest. This area boasts a diverse range of flora and fauna, including various brooding birds. A well-maintained boardwalk allows you to traverse the wetland without getting your feet wet. (zoetermeerisdeplek.nl)

Historical Significance

The region's history is deeply intertwined with water management. The Zoetermeerse Plas was expanded in the late 1980s to provide sand for the construction of nearby neighborhoods. The surrounding polders, such as the Palensteinse Polder, were reclaimed from water through a series of windmills, remnants of which can still be seen along the route. (zoetermeeractief.nl)
