Loop
“Wander through whispering pines and golden dunes, where history and woodland wildlife create a tranquil escape.”
Nestled in the tranquil woodlands near Soest, the De Kozakkenput Loop offers a gentle 6 km (about 3.7 miles) circuit with virtually no elevation gain, making it an ideal choice for beginners, families, or anyone seeking a leisurely stroll through Dutch nature. The trailhead is conveniently located near the Kozakkenput, a historic well and local landmark, just south of Soestduinen and easily accessible from the Soest Zuid train station. From the station, it’s a short walk or a quick bike ride to the start, and for those arriving by car, parking is available at the Kozakkenput parking area on the Foekenlaan.
Getting Oriented and Navigation
The loop is well-marked and follows sandy forest paths and wide, flat tracks through the Utrechtse Heuvelrug National Park’s southern edge. For navigation, HiiKER provides a reliable digital map of the route, ensuring you stay on track even if you decide to explore some of the smaller side trails.
Natural Highlights and Wildlife
The landscape is characterized by a mix of pine and deciduous woodland, interspersed with open heath and patches of drifting sand. In spring and summer, the forest floor bursts with wildflowers, and the air is filled with birdsong. Keep an eye out for woodpeckers, jays, and the occasional roe deer darting through the undergrowth. The sandy clearings are home to lizards basking in the sun, and if you’re lucky, you might spot a fox or a badger at dawn or dusk.
Landmarks and Historical Significance
About 2 km (1.2 miles) into the loop, you’ll pass the Kozakkenput itself—a well dating back to the early 19th century. Legend has it that Russian Cossacks, stationed in the area during the Napoleonic Wars, dug the well to supply their horses with water. The site is marked by an information board detailing its history and significance to the region.
Further along, the trail skirts the edge of the Soesterduinen, a unique inland sand dune area formed during the last Ice Age. These dunes are a rare geological feature in the Netherlands and provide a striking contrast to the surrounding forest. The open sands are a popular spot for a picnic or a short rest.
Trail Conditions and Preparation
With a total elevation gain of less than 5 metres (16 feet), the route is flat and accessible year-round. The sandy sections can be soft after rain, so sturdy walking shoes are recommended, but the trail is suitable for most fitness levels and is dog-friendly. There are no steep climbs or technical sections, making it perfect for a relaxed outing.
Facilities and Access
There are no cafés or restrooms directly on the loop, but Soestduinen village, just a short detour from the trail, offers several options for refreshments. Public transport users can return to Soest Zuid station at the end of the hike, while drivers will find their vehicles conveniently close at the Kozakkenput parking area.
For those interested in extending their walk, the surrounding Utrechtse Heuvelrug offers a network of interconnected trails, all easily navigable with HiiKER, allowing for longer adventures through this historic and scenic region.
