Loop
“Wander through ancient woods and vibrant legends, where sunlight, history, and wildlife paint every step.”
Nestled in the heart of the Utrechtse Heuvelrug, this 11 km (about 6.8 miles) loop trail offers a gentle, flat walk with virtually no elevation gain, making it accessible for hikers of all abilities. The trailhead is conveniently located near the Bezoekerscentrum De Boswerf, a well-known visitor center in Zeist, which serves as an excellent starting point for your adventure.
Getting There
For those arriving by public transport, Zeist is well-connected by bus from Utrecht Central Station. The nearest bus stop to the trailhead is “Zeist, De Boswerf,” just a short walk from the visitor center. If traveling by car, parking is available at the Bezoekerscentrum De Boswerf (Prins Bernhardlaan 3, 3708 BR Zeist), providing easy access to the start of the loop.
Trail Experience
The route meanders through the lush Zeisterbos, one of the oldest managed forests in the Netherlands, and passes by De Kozakkenput, a historic well with roots tracing back to the Napoleonic era. Legend has it that Russian Cossacks, stationed in the area during the winter of 1813-1814, dug the well to supply their horses with water. Today, the well stands as a quiet reminder of the region’s turbulent past.
Highlights and Landmarks
- Zeisterbos: At around 2 km (1.2 miles) into the hike, you’ll find yourself surrounded by towering beech and oak trees, with sunlight filtering through the dense canopy. The forest is home to a variety of bird species, including woodpeckers and tawny owls, and you may spot roe deer grazing in the early morning or late afternoon. - De Kozakkenput: Roughly halfway through the loop, at about 5.5 km (3.4 miles), you’ll encounter the historic well. Interpretive signs provide insight into its origins and the role it played during the Napoleonic wars. - Bezoekerscentrum De Boswerf: Serving as both the start and end point, this visitor center offers educational exhibits about local flora and fauna, a café, and a natural playground for children. It’s an ideal spot to rest and refuel before or after your walk.
Nature and Wildlife
The trail is particularly beautiful in spring and autumn, when wildflowers carpet the forest floor or leaves blaze with color. Keep an eye out for red squirrels darting among the branches and listen for the drumming of woodpeckers. The area is also known for its rich fungal diversity, especially after rain.
Navigation and Facilities
The loop is well-marked, but for added confidence, use HiiKER to follow the route and track your progress. Benches are scattered along the trail, and there are several picnic spots near the visitor center. Restrooms and refreshments are available at De Boswerf.
