Loop
“Wander through blooming heath, ancient rivers, and tranquil wetlands in Drenthe’s enchanting, history-rich landscape.”
Nestled in the heart of Drenthe, this 7 km (about 4.3 miles) loop trail begins near the charming village of Schipborg, close to the well-known Siepelveen nature reserve. With virtually no elevation gain, this easy walk is accessible to hikers of all abilities and is especially suitable for families, casual walkers, and nature enthusiasts seeking a tranquil escape.
Getting There
Schipborg is easily accessible by public transport. The nearest major city is Groningen, from which you can take a train to Assen and then a local bus (such as line 58) to Schipborg. If arriving by car, parking is available near the Siepelveen entrance, close to the intersection of Schapendrift and Schipborgerweg. This spot serves as a convenient trailhead for the loop.
Trail Highlights and Navigation
The route meanders through the Drentsche Aa National Park, a landscape shaped by centuries of natural river meandering and traditional land use. The trail is well-marked, but for added confidence and real-time navigation, HiiKER provides detailed maps and GPS guidance.
- Siepelveen: Early in the loop, you’ll pass through the Siepelveen, a serene peat bog and fen area. This wetland is a haven for birdlife, including reed warblers and marsh harriers. Boardwalks and observation points allow for close-up views without disturbing the delicate ecosystem. - Schapendrift: Continuing along Schapendrift, the path leads through open heathland and scattered groves of birch and pine. In late summer, the heath bursts into purple bloom, attracting butterflies and bees. Watch for grazing sheep, a nod to the region’s pastoral heritage. - De Drentsche Aa: The trail follows the gentle curves of the Drentsche Aa river, one of the last remaining natural rivers in the Netherlands. The riverbanks are lined with wildflowers and ancient willows, and you may spot kingfishers darting over the water. This section is particularly peaceful, with benches for rest and reflection.
Nature and Wildlife
The Drentsche Aa region is renowned for its biodiversity. Besides birds, you might encounter roe deer in the early morning or dusk, and the wetlands are home to frogs and dragonflies. The area’s sandy soils and heathlands support rare plants like sundew and bog rosemary.
Historical Significance
This landscape has been inhabited since prehistoric times. Along the route, you may notice hunebedden (megalithic tombs) and old farmsteads, evidence of Neolithic and Bronze Age settlements. The traditional esdorp (village green) structure of nearby villages reflects centuries-old agricultural practices.
Trail Conditions and Preparation
The path is mostly flat and well-maintained, with a mix of sandy tracks, grassy paths, and occasional boardwalks over wetter sections. Waterproof footwear is recommended after rain. There are no steep climbs, making it suitable for all fitness levels. Bring water and snacks, as there are limited facilities along the route, though cafes and restrooms can be found in Schipborg.
Planning Your Visit
Spring and late summer are particularly beautiful, with wildflowers and blooming heath. Dogs are welcome but should be kept on a leash to protect wildlife. For those interested in extending their adventure, the Drentsche Aa National Park offers numerous intersecting trails, all easily navigable with HiiKER.
