Loop
“Wander beneath a leafy canopy where history, wildlife, and woodland views weave a tapestry of discovery.”
Nestled in the rolling woodlands of Gelderland, this 7 km (about 4.3 miles) loop begins near the charming village of Zeddam, with the trailhead conveniently located close to the historic Grafelijke Korenmolen, a centuries-old windmill that serves as a recognizable landmark for navigation. The route is easily accessible by car, with parking available at the windmill or nearby village lots. For those arriving by public transport, regular buses connect Zeddam with Doetinchem, from where it’s a short walk to the trailhead.
Woodland Trails and Gentle Ascents
The path meanders through the ancient Montferland forest, a region renowned for its beech and oak trees, which form a dense canopy overhead. The terrain is mostly soft forest floor, with occasional sandy stretches and well-maintained paths, making it suitable for hikers of all abilities. Over the course of the loop, you’ll gain approximately 100 metres (about 330 feet) in elevation, with the most notable ascent leading up to the Galgenberg, a modest hill that offers panoramic views of the surrounding countryside.
Landmarks and Historical Significance
At roughly 2 km (1.2 miles) into the hike, you’ll pass the Galgenberg itself, a site with a somber past. Historically, this hill was used as a gallows hill, a place of execution in medieval times. Today, it’s a peaceful spot, but interpretive signs along the route provide insight into its history and the broader significance of the Montferland region, which was once a strategic border area between the Duchy of Guelders and the Bishopric of Münster.
Nature and Wildlife
The Montferland forest is a haven for wildlife. Keep an eye out for roe deer darting through the undergrowth, as well as foxes and badgers, especially in the quieter early morning or late afternoon hours. Birdwatchers will appreciate the variety of woodland species, including woodpeckers, nuthatches, and the occasional buzzard circling overhead. In spring and early summer, the forest floor is carpeted with wildflowers and ferns, adding vibrant color to the landscape.
Navigation and Trail Conditions
Waymarking is clear throughout the loop, but for added confidence, use HiiKER to follow the route and check for any recent trail updates. The path is mostly shaded, but there are a few open stretches, so sun protection is advisable on bright days. The gentle gradients and well-maintained surfaces make this loop ideal for families and those seeking a leisurely walk, though sturdy footwear is recommended, especially after rain when some sections can become muddy.
Facilities and Refreshments
Zeddam offers several cafés and restaurants near the start and end of the loop, perfect for a post-hike meal or coffee. Public toilets are available in the village, and benches are scattered along the route for rest stops.
This loop combines natural beauty, accessible trails, and a touch of local history, making it a rewarding outing for anyone exploring the eastern Netherlands.
