Out and Back
“Golden dunes, wildflowers, and sea breezes frame this tranquil loop past Noordwijk’s historic lighthouse.”
Starting from the coastal village of Noordwijk, the Zuiderduinpad and Rijwelpad Noordvoort trail offers a gentle 15 km (about 9.3 miles) loop with virtually no elevation gain, making it accessible for hikers of all abilities. The trailhead is conveniently located near the Noordwijk Lighthouse (Vuurtoren Noordwijk), a well-known landmark that’s easy to reach by both public transport and car. Buses from Leiden and Haarlem stop at Noordwijk’s central bus station, just a short walk from the lighthouse, while drivers will find ample parking nearby.
Dune Landscapes and Coastal Views The route quickly immerses you in the unique dune ecosystem of the Noordvoort nature reserve. Expect wide sandy paths bordered by marram grass, sea buckthorn, and wild rose bushes. The North Sea is a constant companion, with the sound of waves and salty air ever-present. The trail meanders through open dunes and occasional pine groves, offering panoramic views of the coastline and, on clear days, glimpses of distant ships.
Wildlife and Flora This area is a haven for wildlife. Look out for grazing Scottish Highland cattle and Konik horses, which help maintain the biodiversity of the dunes. Birdwatchers will appreciate the chance to spot skylarks, kestrels, and sometimes even rare migratory species. In spring and early summer, the dunes burst into color with wildflowers, attracting butterflies and bees.
Historical Context The Noordvoort dunes have a rich history, once serving as a natural barrier against the sea for centuries. During World War II, this stretch of coast was part of the Atlantic Wall, and you may notice remnants of bunkers hidden among the dunes. Informational signs along the route provide insight into the area’s strategic importance and the ongoing conservation efforts to preserve its unique landscape.
Navigation and Trail Conditions The paths are well-marked, but shifting sands and occasional overgrowth can obscure the way, especially after storms. For reliable navigation, use the HiiKER app, which provides up-to-date trail maps and waypoints. The terrain is mostly flat and sandy, with some firmer sections through pine woods. Waterproof footwear is recommended after rain, as some low-lying areas can become muddy.
Facilities and Points of Interest There are several rest spots along the route, including benches with sea views and picnic areas sheltered by dunes. About halfway, the trail passes close to the Noordvoort birdwatching hide, a perfect spot for a break and some wildlife observation. There are no cafés or shops directly on the trail, so bring enough water and snacks for the day. Public toilets are available at the Noordwijk beach promenade near the start and end of the hike.
Getting There and Away To reach Noordwijk, take bus 20 or 21 from Leiden Central Station, which runs frequently and takes about 30 minutes. If arriving by car, set your navigation to Vuurtorenplein, Noordwijk; parking is available at the boulevard. The trail is circular, so you’ll finish back at the lighthouse, where you can enjoy the beach or explore Noordwijk’s lively promenade before heading home.
