Loop
“Wander through wildflower meadows, tranquil woodlands, and echoes of history on this serene Amsterdam loop.”
Starting from the edge of the Amsterdamse Bos, near the Bosbaan rowing lake, the Rozenwaterveld and Renbaanveld Loop offers a gentle 5 km (about 3.1 miles) circuit with virtually no elevation gain, making it accessible for hikers of all abilities. The trailhead is easily reached by public transport: take tram 5 or metro 51 to Amstelveenseweg, then walk west along Bosbaanweg to the main entrance of the Amsterdamse Bos. For those arriving by car, parking is available at the Bosbaan car park, just off Bosbaanweg.
Navigating the Loop
The route is well-marked and can be easily followed using HiiKER, which provides up-to-date trail maps and navigation tools. The loop begins by skirting the Bosbaan, a historic rowing course built in the 1930s, before veering south into the heart of the Amsterdamse Bos. The terrain is flat and the paths are mostly wide, compacted gravel or grass, suitable for walking year-round.
Landmarks and Points of Interest
After about 1 km (0.6 miles), the trail enters the Rozenwaterveld, a tranquil meadow area known for its wildflowers in spring and summer. This section is a haven for birdwatchers, with frequent sightings of herons, coots, and sometimes even kingfishers along the water’s edge. The meadows are interspersed with small ponds and reed beds, providing habitat for frogs and dragonflies.
Continuing west, the route passes through the Renbaanveld, once the site of a horse racing track. Today, it’s an open grassy expanse bordered by mature trees, popular with picnickers and families. The remnants of the old racecourse can still be traced in the landscape, offering a glimpse into the recreational history of the area.
Nature and Wildlife
The Amsterdamse Bos is a managed woodland, home to a mix of native and introduced tree species, including oak, beech, and chestnut. In autumn, the forest floor is dotted with mushrooms, and deer are sometimes spotted in the quieter clearings. The loop is especially beautiful in late April and early May, when the cherry blossom avenue near the Bosbaan is in full bloom.
Facilities and Accessibility
Restrooms and cafés are located near the Bosbaan and at the main visitor center, about 500 meters (0.3 miles) from the start of the loop. The paths are mostly flat and suitable for strollers and wheelchairs, though some grassy sections may be muddy after rain. Dogs are welcome but should be kept on a leash in designated areas.
Planning Your Visit
The loop is ideal for a leisurely walk, taking about 1–1.5 hours at a relaxed pace. HiiKER is recommended for navigation, as it provides detailed maps and real-time trail updates. The area is busiest on weekends, so early mornings or weekdays offer a quieter experience. Public transport connections make it easy to combine this hike with a visit to central Amsterdam or Amstelveen.
