Loop
“Wander past windmills and wildflowers on a tranquil loop through North Holland’s storybook countryside.”
Starting from the charming village of Zaandijk, just a short walk from the Zaandijk Zaanse Schans train station, this 7 km (about 4.3 miles) loop offers a gentle, flat stroll through the heart of North Holland’s iconic polder landscape. The trailhead is conveniently located near the historic windmills and wooden houses of Zaanse Schans, making it easily accessible by both public transport and car. If arriving by train, take the Sprinter service from Amsterdam Centraal to Zaandijk Zaanse Schans; from there, it’s a 10-minute walk to the start. For drivers, parking is available at the Zaanse Schans visitor lot.
Scenery and Landmarks
The route follows the Mallegatsloot, a narrow waterway that winds through lush meadows and past traditional Dutch farmhouses. Expect to see grazing sheep and cows, and in spring and summer, the fields are dotted with wildflowers. The flat terrain—there’s virtually no elevation gain, with the highest point barely above sea level—makes this walk accessible to all fitness levels.
About 2 km (1.2 miles) in, you’ll pass close to the Gouw, a historic water channel that once played a vital role in draining the surrounding peatlands. The area is crisscrossed with dikes and canals, a testament to centuries of Dutch water management. Keep an eye out for the classic wooden drawbridges and the occasional stork’s nest perched atop a pole.
Nature and Wildlife
Birdwatchers will appreciate the abundance of waterfowl, including herons, grebes, and coots. The wetlands attract migratory birds, especially in spring and autumn. The reed beds along the Mallegatsloot are home to warblers and sometimes even the elusive bittern. In the quieter stretches, you might spot hares darting through the grass or hear the distant call of a cuckoo.
Cultural and Historical Highlights
Zaandijk and its surroundings are steeped in history. The nearby Zaanse Schans is an open-air museum showcasing 18th and 19th-century windmills, barns, and houses, many of which are still in use. The region was a powerhouse of Dutch industry during the Golden Age, with windmills sawing timber, grinding spices, and pressing oil. As you walk, you’ll notice the unique green-painted wooden houses typical of the Zaan region.
Trail Navigation and Facilities
The loop is well-marked, but for added confidence, use HiiKER to follow the route and check your progress. There are several benches along the way, perfect for a picnic or a rest. Public toilets and cafés can be found at Zaanse Schans, both at the start and end of your walk.
Getting There and Practical Tips
Public transport is straightforward: trains from Amsterdam to Zaandijk Zaanse Schans run frequently, and the walk from the station to the trailhead is well signposted. If driving, set your navigation to Zaanse Schans, Schansend 7, 1509 AW Zaandam, which is the main entrance and parking area for the region.
Bring waterproof footwear in wetter months, as some sections near the water can be muddy. The trail is suitable for families and those seeking a relaxed outing, with plenty of opportunities to enjoy the unique Dutch countryside and its rich cultural heritage.
