Loop
“Wander through wildflower meadows and riverside history, where medieval legends meet soaring birds and big skies.”
Starting from the vicinity of Slot Loevestein, a medieval castle near the village of Poederoijen in Gelderland, this 12 km (about 7.5 miles) loop offers a flat, easy walk with virtually no elevation gain, making it accessible for hikers of all abilities. The trail circles through the floodplains and river landscapes shaped by the Waal and Afgedamde Maas rivers, providing a unique blend of natural beauty and Dutch history.
Getting There Slot Loevestein is well-connected by public transport. Take the train to Gorinchem, then transfer to the regional bus (line 47) towards Woudrichem, alighting at the Loevestein stop. From there, it’s a short walk to the castle and trailhead. For those arriving by car, parking is available at the castle’s visitor lot (Loevestein 1, 5307 TG Poederoijen).
Historic Landmarks and River Views The route begins at Slot Loevestein, a fortress built in the 14th century, famous for its role in Dutch history as a state prison and its connection to Hugo de Groot’s legendary escape in a book chest. The castle grounds are open to visitors, and the ramparts offer panoramic views over the confluence of the Maas and Waal rivers.
Following the dike, the trail leads you along the Afgedamde Maas, a former branch of the Maas River now separated by a dam. The landscape here is quintessentially Dutch: wide open skies, grazing cattle, and the rhythmic sweep of windmills in the distance. At around 3 km (1.9 miles), you’ll pass through the Waarden bij Loevestein, a nature reserve known for its wetlands, reed beds, and willow groves. This area is a haven for birdlife, including storks, herons, and sometimes even sea eagles.
Nature and Wildlife The floodplains are managed for biodiversity, with grazing Konik horses and Galloway cattle helping to maintain the open grasslands. In spring and early summer, wildflowers carpet the meadows, attracting butterflies and bees. The riverbanks are home to beavers, whose lodges and gnawed tree trunks are often visible near the water’s edge.
Navigation and Trail Conditions The loop is well-marked, but carrying a digital map on HiiKER is recommended for real-time navigation and to explore side paths or detours. The terrain is mostly gravel and grass paths, with occasional muddy patches after rain. Waterproof footwear is advisable, especially in wetter months.
Points of Interest Along the Route At approximately 7 km (4.3 miles), the trail skirts the edge of the Munnikenland, a restored floodplain where you might spot roe deer or catch sight of rare marsh orchids. The path then curves back towards the castle, offering views across the river to the fortified town of Woudrichem, another historical gem worth a visit if time allows.
Facilities and Practical Tips There are restrooms and a café at Slot Loevestein, ideal for a pre- or post-hike refreshment. Benches and picnic spots are scattered along the dike. The area is exposed, so bring sun protection and windproof clothing. Dogs are allowed on leash, but be mindful of grazing livestock.
This loop is a gentle immersion into the Dutch river landscape, rich with history, wildlife, and the ever-present interplay of water and land.
