Loop
“Wander through whispering pines, shimmering waters, and echoes of history on this gentle Utrechtse Heuvelrug loop.”
Nestled in the heart of the Utrechtse Heuvelrug, this 10 km (6.2 miles) loop offers a gentle, flat walk with virtually no elevation gain, making it accessible for all levels of hikers. The trailhead is conveniently located near the Henschotermeer, a popular recreational lake just south of Woudenberg, with the nearest significant landmark being the main entrance to Henschotermeer at De Heygraeff, Woudenberg.
Getting There For those arriving by public transport, take the train to Amersfoort Centraal, then transfer to bus 80 or 81 towards Woudenberg. Disembark at the “Woudenberg, Henschotermeer” stop, which is a short walk from the trailhead. If arriving by car, parking is available at the Henschotermeer car park (De Heygraeff 2, 3931 MK Woudenberg), which serves as a convenient starting point.
Trail Overview The loop begins with a stroll along the sandy shores of Henschotermeer, a man-made lake surrounded by pine forests and heather fields. The clear, shallow waters and white sand beaches make this area a favorite for families and birdwatchers. Early in the morning, you might spot grebes, herons, and the occasional kingfisher darting across the water.
Nature and Wildlife After leaving the lakeside, the trail meanders through mixed woodland dominated by Scots pine, oak, and beech. In spring and summer, the forest floor is carpeted with wildflowers and ferns, while autumn brings a spectacular display of mushrooms and changing leaves. Roe deer, red squirrels, and woodpeckers are commonly seen, especially in the quieter stretches away from the lake.
Historical Significance The region is steeped in history, with the Utrechtse Heuvelrug itself formed during the last Ice Age. As you walk, you’ll pass remnants of ancient sand drifts and heathlands that were once grazed by sheep. The area around De Hoogt, roughly halfway through the loop, is notable for its old farmsteads and traces of World War II defensive lines, part of the Grebbelinie, which played a significant role in Dutch military history.
Landmarks and Points of Interest At approximately 4 km (2.5 miles), the trail skirts the edge of De Hoogt, a slightly elevated area offering views over open meadows and distant woodlands. This is a great spot for a picnic or a rest. Continuing on, the path loops back through tranquil forest, passing several small ponds and sandy clearings that are ideal for spotting dragonflies and butterflies in summer.
Navigation and Facilities The route is well-marked, but for added confidence, use HiiKER to follow the loop and check your progress. There are several benches and picnic tables along the way, and toilets and refreshments are available at the Henschotermeer entrance during opening hours. Dogs are welcome but must be kept on a leash in certain sections, especially near the lake and wildlife areas.
This easy, scenic loop is perfect for a relaxed day out, offering a blend of natural beauty, wildlife, and a touch of local history, all within easy reach of central Netherlands.
