Loop
“Wander through a patchwork of lakes, windmills, and wildflowers in the heart of Dutch polder charm.”
Starting near the village of Hoogmade, just outside Leiden in South Holland, this 8 km (about 5 miles) loop offers a flat, easy-going walk through the quintessential Dutch polder landscape. With virtually no elevation gain, it’s accessible for all levels and ideal for a leisurely day out, whether you’re a solo hiker, with friends, or bringing the family along.
Getting There
To reach the trailhead, head towards Hoogmade, which is easily accessible by car via the A4 motorway—take the Hoogmade exit and follow signs into the village. For those using public transport, take a train to Leiden Centraal, then transfer to a local bus (such as Arriva line 182 or 183) towards Hoogmade. The trail begins near the Kerkweg, close to the village church, a recognizable landmark in the area.
Route Overview and Navigation
The route follows a scenic loop, starting from Kerkweg and heading out along Oudelandsedijk, tracing the edges of the Wijde Aa lake. The path is well-marked and mostly paved or gravel, making it suitable for all weather conditions. For navigation, download the route on HiiKER to ensure you stay on track, especially at junctions where smaller farm roads intersect the main path.
Landmarks and Points of Interest
- Wijde Aa Lake: Early in the hike, you’ll skirt the shores of the Wijde Aa, a broad, tranquil lake popular with local sailors and birdwatchers. The open water attracts a variety of waterfowl, including grebes, swans, and herons. In spring and summer, the reed beds are alive with the calls of warblers. - Historic Windmills: About 2 km (1.2 miles) in, you’ll pass close to the ‘Hoogmadesche Molen’, a classic Dutch windmill dating back to the 19th century. These windmills are a reminder of the region’s centuries-old battle with water, as they were used to pump excess water from the low-lying polders. - Oudelandsedijk: This dike road offers panoramic views across the flat polder fields, dotted with grazing cattle and traditional farmhouses. On clear days, you can see church spires from neighboring villages on the horizon. - Kerkweg Return: The final stretch brings you back along Kerkweg, passing through the heart of Hoogmade. The village church, with its distinctive tower, is a focal point and a good spot to pause for photos or a snack.
Nature and Wildlife
The polder landscape is rich in birdlife year-round. In addition to waterfowl, look for lapwings, oystercatchers, and sometimes even storks in the meadows. The ditches and canals lining the route are home to frogs and dragonflies, especially in warmer months. Wildflowers bloom along the verges in late spring and early summer, adding color to the green fields.
Historical Significance
This region of South Holland has a deep connection to Dutch water management. The network of dikes, canals, and windmills you’ll see along the route are part of a centuries-old system designed to reclaim and protect land from flooding. Hoogmade itself dates back to the Middle Ages, and the surrounding fields have been cultivated for generations.
Trail Preparation
With a total distance of 8 km (5 miles) and no elevation gain, this hike is suitable for most walkers. Wear comfortable walking shoes, as some sections can be muddy after rain. There are limited facilities along the route, so bring water and snacks. Public toilets and a few cafés can be found in Hoogmade at the start and end of the hike.
