Point-to-Point
“Follow the winding Oude Rijn from castle-crowned Woerden to storybook Breukelen, where history and birdlife flourish.”
Starting from the historic town of Woerden, this 18 km (about 11 miles) route follows the gentle curves of the Oude Rijn and the scenic Hollandse Kade, with virtually no elevation gain—making it accessible for most walkers. Woerden is easily reached by train from Utrecht or Amsterdam, with the station just a short walk from the town center and the trailhead. For those arriving by car, parking is available near Woerden’s central station and in the town center.
Setting Out from Woerden
The trail begins near Woerden’s charming old town, known for its medieval castle and lively market square. As you leave the town, the route quickly transitions into the tranquil Dutch countryside, following the Oude Rijn, a historic branch of the Rhine River that once served as a vital Roman transport route. The riverbanks are lined with willows and reeds, and you’ll often spot herons, swans, and the occasional kingfisher darting over the water.
Oude Rijn: History and Nature
For the first 7 km (about 4.3 miles), the path hugs the Oude Rijn, offering wide views over flat, green meadows dotted with grazing cattle and traditional Dutch farmhouses. The river itself is a living piece of history, once forming the northern border of the Roman Empire. Along this stretch, you’ll pass several small locks and drawbridges, reminders of the Netherlands’ centuries-old battle with water. Keep an eye out for the Roman Limes, a UNESCO World Heritage site, with information panels explaining the ancient frontier’s significance.
Transition to Hollandse Kade
At around the halfway point, the route leaves the river and joins the Hollandse Kade, a centuries-old raised embankment that once protected the land from flooding. This section is particularly peaceful, with the path flanked by narrow drainage ditches and rows of poplars. The kade is a haven for birdlife, especially in spring and autumn when migratory species pass through. You may see lapwings, godwits, and sometimes even storks foraging in the fields.
Approaching Breukelen
The final 6 km (about 3.7 miles) lead you toward Breukelen, a picturesque village that gave its name to Brooklyn, New York. The approach is marked by stately country houses and tree-lined avenues, a legacy of the region’s wealthy merchants from the Dutch Golden Age. Breukelen’s historic center, with its riverside terraces and the 15th-century St. Peter’s Church, is a fitting end to the walk.
Navigation and Practical Tips
The entire route is flat and well-marked, suitable for all fitness levels. Surfaces are a mix of paved paths and compacted gravel, so sturdy walking shoes are recommended, especially after rain. Public transport connections are excellent at both ends: Woerden and Breukelen are on the main railway line between Utrecht and Amsterdam, with frequent trains in both directions. For navigation, HiiKER provides detailed maps and waypoints to keep you on track throughout the journey.
Refreshments are available in both Woerden and Breukelen, and there are several picnic spots along the river and kade. Toilets are available at the start and end points, but facilities are limited along the route itself, so plan accordingly. The open landscape offers little shelter from wind or sun, so bring appropriate clothing and sun protection.
