Loop
“Wander through meadows, woodlands, and history on a gentle Dutch countryside loop rich with charm.”
Starting from the outskirts of Winterswijk, a charming town in the eastern Netherlands, this 10 km (about 6.2 miles) loop offers a gentle, flat walk through the heart of the Achterhoek region. With virtually no elevation gain, it’s an accessible route for hikers of all abilities, making it ideal for families, beginners, or anyone seeking a leisurely day outdoors.
Getting There The trailhead is conveniently located near the Beerninkhoek area, just a short distance from Winterswijk’s town center. If arriving by public transport, take the train to Winterswijk station. From there, local buses or a short taxi ride can bring you to the start, or you can walk the 2 km (1.2 miles) from the station. For those driving, parking is available near Beerninkhoek, with clear signage pointing towards the trail.
Landscape and Terrain Expect a classic Dutch countryside experience: wide, open fields bordered by hedgerows, tranquil farmsteads, and patches of woodland. The route is almost entirely flat, with well-maintained paths that alternate between gravel, dirt, and occasional paved farm tracks. After about 2 km (1.2 miles), you’ll pass through the Scholtenpad, an area named after the historic “Scholtenboeren”—wealthy farmers who shaped the landscape with their stately farmhouses and extensive landholdings. Many of these traditional farms, some dating back to the 18th and 19th centuries, are still visible along the route.
Points of Interest and Landmarks Historic Farmsteads and Rural Architecture Between 3 and 5 km (1.8–3.1 miles), the trail meanders past several well-preserved Scholtenboeren estates. Look for the distinctive brickwork, ornate gables, and large barns typical of the region. Some properties are still working farms, while others have been converted into guesthouses or cultural sites.
Beerninkhoek Woodlands and Wetlands Around the halfway mark, the path skirts the edge of the Beerninkhoek woodlands. This area is a haven for local wildlife—keep an eye out for roe deer, hares, and a variety of songbirds. In spring and early summer, wildflowers line the ditches and meadows, attracting butterflies and bees. The wetlands here are also home to frogs and dragonflies, especially after rainfall.
Cultural and Historical Significance The Achterhoek region has a rich agricultural history, and the Scholtenpad is a living reminder of the area’s prosperity in centuries past. The landscape was shaped by the Scholtenboeren, whose influence is still evident in the layout of fields, hedgerows, and water management systems. Informational signs along the route provide insight into this unique rural heritage.
Navigation and Facilities The loop is well-marked, but for precise navigation and up-to-date trail conditions, use HiiKER. There are several benches and picnic spots along the way, particularly near the woodlands and at scenic viewpoints. Public toilets and refreshments can be found in Winterswijk before or after your hike.
Seasonal Considerations This trail is enjoyable year-round. In autumn, the woodlands are especially beautiful with colorful foliage, while spring brings lush greenery and abundant birdlife. The flat terrain ensures the path remains accessible even after rain, though waterproof footwear is recommended in wetter months.
Whether you’re interested in rural history, Dutch landscapes, or simply a peaceful walk, this loop offers a rewarding experience with minimal effort and plenty to discover.
