Point-to-Point
“Wander from star-shaped bastions to wildflower dikes, savoring tranquil waterlands and rich Dutch history.”
Starting out from the historic town of Willemstad, this 20 km (about 12.4 miles) route to Moerdijk is a flat, easy walk with virtually no elevation gain—perfect for those seeking a relaxed day in the Dutch countryside. The trailhead is conveniently located near Willemstad’s old fortress walls, a short walk from the town center. Willemstad is accessible by bus from Rotterdam or Breda, with connections from the nearby train station in Lage Zwaluwe. For drivers, parking is available near the harbor and fortress entrance.
Historic Willemstad and Fortifications Willemstad is renowned for its star-shaped fortifications, dating back to the late 16th century. Before setting off, take a moment to explore the bastions, moats, and the old city gate. The town’s layout and defensive structures are among the best-preserved examples of Dutch military engineering from the Eighty Years’ War.
Buitengorzen Nature Reserve (Approx. 5 km / 3.1 miles in) Heading north, the route quickly leaves the urban area behind, following dikes and quiet country lanes. The Buitengorzen nature reserve is a highlight, with its tidal wetlands and reed beds along the Hollands Diep estuary. This area is a haven for birdlife—look for spoonbills, herons, and marsh harriers. In spring and summer, wildflowers line the dike, and grazing cattle help maintain the open landscape.
Appelzak and the Open Polders (Approx. 12 km / 7.5 miles in) Continuing east, the trail passes through the Appelzak polder, a reclaimed landscape of meadows and drainage canals. This section is especially tranquil, with expansive views and the occasional windmill on the horizon. The flat terrain makes for easy walking, and the well-maintained paths are suitable for all fitness levels. Keep an eye out for hares and, in winter, flocks of geese feeding in the fields.
Crossing to Moerdijk (Final 5 km / 3.1 miles) Approaching Moerdijk, the route follows the water’s edge, offering views of the impressive Moerdijk bridges—key transport links across the Hollands Diep. These bridges have played a significant role in Dutch history, particularly during World War II, when they were fiercely contested. The final stretch leads into Moerdijk village, where you’ll find cafes and a small harbor.
Navigation and Practical Tips The entire route is well-marked, but for precise navigation and up-to-date trail conditions, use HiiKER. The flat profile and good surfaces mean standard walking shoes are sufficient, though waterproof footwear is recommended in wet weather. Public transport from Moerdijk back to Willemstad is possible via bus, with connections to major train lines at Lage Zwaluwe.
Expect a peaceful journey through a landscape shaped by centuries of water management, with plenty of opportunities to spot wildlife and enjoy the unique Dutch polder scenery.
