Starting Point and Access
The trailhead is located in the fortified town of Heusden, North Brabant. For those traveling by public transport, buses connect Heusden to nearby cities; check local schedules for the most current information. If arriving by car, parking is available near the town center, providing convenient access to the starting point.
Trail Overview
Beginning in Heusden, the route guides you through the town's well-preserved medieval streets, featuring windmills and historic canals. As you depart Heusden, the path follows the outer moats and walls, leading to the village of Herpt. Here, you'll encounter the River Maas, which you'll cross using the Bernse Veer ferry. It's advisable to check the ferry's operating times and fees in advance.
Kasteel Nederhemert and Surroundings
After crossing the river, the trail continues to Kasteel Nederhemert, a castle with origins dating back to the 14th century. The castle has undergone several restorations, especially after damage during World War II, and stands as a testament to the region's resilience and architectural heritage. Nearby, the Kleine Schans, a historic fortification, offers insight into the area's military past.
Natural Landscapes and Wildlife
The loop traverses diverse landscapes, including riverbanks, forests, and agricultural fields. Along the way, you may observe a variety of bird species native to the region. The flat terrain and well-maintained paths make for a comfortable hiking experience, allowing you to fully appreciate the natural beauty of the Dutch countryside.
Navigation and Preparation
The trail is well-marked, but for enhanced navigation, consider using the HiiKER app, which provides detailed maps and real-time updates. Given the trail's length, it's recommended to carry sufficient water and snacks. While the route is predominantly flat, wearing comfortable walking shoes is advisable. Additionally, be mindful of the ferry schedule to ensure a smooth crossing of the River Maas.
This loop offers a harmonious blend of historical exploration and natural beauty, making it an enriching experience for those interested in the cultural and environmental heritage of the Netherlands.
