Out and Back
“Drift through wild dunes, wartime echoes, and sweeping sea views on this vibrant coastal escape.”
Starting from the edge of Velsen-Noord, just a short walk from the IJmuiden beach entrance, this 7 km (about 4.3 miles) loop offers a gentle, flat route with virtually no elevation gain, making it accessible for all levels of hikers. The trailhead is conveniently located near the main beach parking area at Reyndersweg, close to the well-known Strandpaviljoen Noordzee, which is easily reached by bus from Beverwijk or IJmuiden stations, or by car with ample parking available.
Dunes and Coastal Scenery The route quickly immerses you in the unique landscape of the Dutch North Sea coast. Expect to traverse wide sandy paths through the Het Hoge Duin nature reserve, where the rolling dunes are covered in marram grass and wildflowers, especially vibrant in late spring and summer. The open terrain provides sweeping views of the North Sea and the industrial skyline of IJmuiden, a striking contrast that highlights the region’s blend of nature and industry.
Wildlife and Flora Keep an eye out for rabbits darting through the undergrowth and, if you’re lucky, the occasional fox. Birdwatchers will appreciate the abundance of coastal species, including gulls, terns, and sometimes kestrels hovering above the dunes. The area is also home to hardy dune plants such as sea holly and sand sedge, which help stabilize the shifting sands.
Historical Context This stretch of coastline has a rich history, with remnants of World War II bunkers hidden among the dunes, part of the Atlantic Wall defenses built by the Germans. Some of these concrete structures are accessible and can be explored, offering a glimpse into the area’s wartime past. The proximity to the North Sea Canal and the port of IJmuiden means you’ll also see massive ships passing by, a reminder of the region’s longstanding maritime significance.
Beach Walk and Landmarks At roughly the halfway point, the trail opens onto the broad, sandy beach of Velsen-Noord. Here, you can walk along the shoreline, enjoying the fresh sea breeze and the sound of waves. The beach is popular with locals but rarely crowded, and there are several beach pavilions where you can stop for refreshments. The return leg of the hike leads back through the dunes, passing close to the entrance of the Tata Steel plant, a landmark of the area’s industrial heritage.
Navigation and Preparation The route is well-marked, but sandy paths and occasional windblown sections can make navigation tricky in poor weather. Use HiiKER for up-to-date trail maps and waypoints. Bring layers, as coastal winds can be brisk even in summer, and sturdy shoes for sandy and sometimes muddy sections. There are no significant climbs, but the open landscape offers little shelter from sun or rain.
Public transport users can take bus 74 or 382 from Beverwijk or Haarlem to the Velsen-Noord Strand stop, which is a short walk from the trailhead. For drivers, parking is available at Reyndersweg, near the main beach entrance. Toilets and refreshments are available at the beach pavilions, but bring water and snacks for the quieter dune sections.
