Wijhe to Wezep via Tichelpad

Starting from the charming village of Wijhe, this 29 km (about 18 miles) route to Wezep via the Tichelpad offers a gentle, flat walk through the heart of Overijssel and Gelderland, with virtually no elevation gain—perfect for those seeking a relaxed, scenic day out. The trailhead is conveniently located near Wijhe railway station, making it easily accessible by train from Zwolle or Deventer, or by car with parking available in the village center.

Getting Oriented and Setting Off
From Wijhe, the path quickly leaves the village behind, following quiet country lanes and dike roads that trace the contours of the IJssel River. Early on, you’ll pass through a patchwork of meadows and farmland, with expansive views across the river’s floodplains. The IJssel is one of the Netherlands’ most picturesque rivers, and its banks are dotted with historic farmsteads and small, centuries-old hamlets.

Nature and Wildlife
The route is renowned for its birdlife, especially in spring and autumn when migratory species flock to the wetlands. Keep an eye out for storks, herons, and the occasional osprey. The floodplains are also home to grazing cattle and wild horses, which help maintain the open landscape. In summer, the meadows burst with wildflowers, attracting butterflies and bees.

Historic Landmarks and Cultural Highlights
Around the halfway mark, near the village of Wapenveld (approximately 14 km/8.7 miles from the start), you’ll encounter the ancient Tichelpad itself—a historic clay path once used by workers transporting clay to local brickworks. The region’s brickmaking history is still visible in the landscape, with old kiln chimneys and clay pits occasionally peeking through the greenery. Wapenveld is a good spot for a rest, with local cafés and shops.

Continuing south, the trail skirts the edge of the Veluwe forest, one of the largest nature reserves in the Netherlands. While the route itself remains open and flat, the nearby woodlands offer a change in scenery and the chance to spot deer or foxes at dawn or dusk.

Final Stretch to Wezep
The last section leads you through tranquil heathland and past small streams, before arriving in Wezep. The town is known for its historic windmill, Molen de Hoop, and its leafy residential streets. Wezep railway station is just a short walk from the trail’s end, providing easy onward connections to Zwolle and other major cities.

Navigation and Preparation
The entire route is well-marked, but for added confidence and real-time updates, use HiiKER to follow the trail and check for any diversions or points of interest. The flat terrain and well-maintained paths make this hike suitable for all fitness levels, though sturdy walking shoes are recommended, especially after rain when some sections can be muddy. Bring plenty of water and snacks, as services are limited between Wijhe and Wapenveld.

Public transport is reliable, with frequent trains to both Wijhe and Wezep from Zwolle. If driving, parking is available at both trailheads, but spaces can fill quickly on weekends. The region’s rich history, abundant wildlife, and peaceful landscapes make this a rewarding journey for anyone looking to explore the Dutch countryside at a gentle pace.
