Point-to-Point
“Stroll along the storied Zuiderdijk, where vast skies, village charm, and Dutch heritage unfold beautifully.”
Starting near the small settlement of Kraaienburg, this 18 km (about 11.2 miles) route follows the historic Zuiderdijk and passes through the agricultural heartland of North Holland, finishing in the charming harbor town of Enkhuizen. With virtually no elevation gain, this easy walk is ideal for those seeking a scenic, flat journey through Dutch polder landscapes, dike-side vistas, and centuries-old villages.
Getting There
Kraaienburg is best accessed by car, with parking available near the intersection of Zuiderdijk and Kraaienburgweg, just outside the village of Wijdenes. For those using public transport, take a train to Hoorn, then a local bus (such as line 132 or 133) toward Venhuizen, alighting at the Wijdenes stop. From there, it’s a short walk north to the trailhead.
Following the Zuiderdijk
The route quickly joins the Zuiderdijk, a historic dike that has protected the region from the IJsselmeer for centuries. The dike itself is a living monument to Dutch water management, with sweeping views over the reclaimed polder land to the south and the vast expanse of the IJsselmeer to the north. The first 6 km (3.7 miles) are characterized by open skies, grazing sheep, and the rhythmic presence of wind turbines. Birdlife is abundant, especially in spring and autumn, when migratory species stop over in the wetlands and meadows.
De Drieban and Rural Heritage
Approaching the hamlet of De Drieban at around the 10 km (6.2 miles) mark, the landscape shifts subtly. Here, you’ll pass traditional farmhouses, orchards, and the occasional historic windmill. The area is known for its fertile soil, a legacy of centuries of land reclamation and careful water management. Keep an eye out for storks, herons, and the rare black-tailed godwit, which nests in these fields.
Final Stretch to Enkhuizen
The last 8 km (5 miles) lead you along the dike and through the outskirts of Enkhuizen, a town with deep maritime roots. As you approach, the skyline is dominated by the spires and towers of this former Zuiderzee port. Enkhuizen’s harbor, museums, and historic city center are well worth exploring at the end of your walk. The town is easily accessible by train, with regular services back to Hoorn and Amsterdam.
Navigation and Safety
The entire route is well-marked, but for precise navigation and up-to-date trail conditions, use HiiKER. The path is mostly paved or gravel, suitable for all fitness levels, and there are several benches and picnic spots along the way. Weather can change quickly along the IJsselmeer, so bring windproof clothing and check forecasts before setting out.
Historical Significance
This region is steeped in history, from the engineering marvel of the Zuiderdijk to the trading legacy of Enkhuizen, once a major port of the Dutch East India Company. The landscape tells the story of the Netherlands’ ongoing battle with water, and the villages along the route retain much of their old-world charm.
Expect a tranquil, culturally rich journey through one of North Holland’s most iconic landscapes, with plenty of opportunities to observe wildlife, enjoy local produce, and immerse yourself in Dutch history.
