Point-to-Point
“From Wezep’s woods to breezy heath and IJssel dikes, finish in Zwolle’s storybook English park.”
Starting from Station Wezep (Stationsweg 107, 8091 AC Wezep), you’ll be on a mostly level, lowland walk of about 16 km / 10 miles with only gentle rises and dips (expect it to feel like ~0–80 m / 0–260 ft of total up-and-down depending on the exact line you take). Underfoot you’ll get a classic mix for this part of Gelderland/Overijssel: firm village paths, sandy forest tracks on the Veluwe edge, heathland trails, then riverside dike walking and finally park paths as you enter Zwolle.
From the station forecourt you quickly leave the built-up area and head into greener corridors on the edge of the Veluwe. The first 2–4 km / 1.2–2.5 miles are a warm-up through mixed woodland and quiet lanes—good for settling into pace. In wet periods, expect puddled sections on the more compacted forest tracks; in dry spells, some sandy stretches can feel softer underfoot.
By roughly 4–7 km / 2.5–4.3 miles, you reach the open character of the Wezepsche Heide area: wider skies, heather and rough grassland, and a noticeably more “wild” feel compared with the earlier woods. This is one of the most exposed parts of the day—wind can be a factor even when nearby towns feel calm. If you’re using HiiKER, this is a good place to double-check you’re following the correct line across the open ground, as multiple informal tracks can braid together.
Wildlife-wise, this heath-and-wood edge habitat is known for birds of prey overhead and grazing animals in some sections; keep a respectful distance, especially if you encounter large grazers near narrow paths. Ticks can be present in heath/long grass in warmer months—long socks and a quick check at breaks are sensible.
After the heath, the route trends toward more cultivated landscapes and historic settlement edges. Over the next 3–5 km / 2–3 miles, you’ll typically pass near estate-like scenery and older rural infrastructure—ditches, small bridges, and field boundaries that reflect centuries of land management on the transition between the higher Veluwe sands and the river lowlands.
As you approach the IJssel corridor (the broad river landscape that shapes this region), the walking becomes more open again, often on or near dikes. This is where you start to feel the geography that made nearby towns important: the IJssel was a major medieval trade artery, and Zwolle developed as a prominent Hanseatic city in this network—its prosperity historically tied to river access and commerce.
Here you’ll notice: - Curving paths, alternating dense tree cover and open lawns, and frequent “framed” views toward water and dike lines—hallmarks of the English landscape style. ([zwolle.nl](https://www.zwolle.nl/parken/park-het-engelse-werk?utm_source=openai)) - Remnants and shapes of older fortification elements integrated into the park’s layout, reflecting Zwolle’s historic defensive planning along the IJssel. ([zwolle.nl](https://www.zwolle.nl/parken/park-het-engelse-werk?utm_source=openai)) - High nature value areas around water and woodland, with seasonal flowers and strong birdlife interest (some areas have long-standing protection measures for breeding birds). Surfaces in the park are generally easy-going, but after rain the edges near water can be slick. If you’re finishing at Station Zwolle, use HiiKER to keep your line efficient through the park exits and urban approach—Zwolle’s outer paths can offer multiple parallel options.
Practical planning notes for an easy day: - Time: Most hikers will take 3.5–5 hours depending on stops and exact routing. - Footwear: Light hiking shoes are fine; choose something with decent grip for sandy heath tracks and damp park paths. - Food/water: You’ll have opportunities closer to Zwolle and around the park area; still, carry enough for the open heath/dike sections where services are sparse.
