“A time-rich Dutch loop from Hattem’s river dikes to Hellendoorn’s hushed woods, gently rolling.”
This is a long, mostly flat-to-gently rolling 103 km (64 mi) loop through the eastern/central Netherlands, linking the IJssel river landscapes around Hattem and Heerde with the more wooded, slightly hillier country toward Hellendoorn. With roughly 200 m (656 ft) of total ascent spread across the whole route, the effort comes more from time-on-feet and surface variety than from climbing. Expect a mix of riverside paths, farm lanes, village connectors, and long, quiet stretches through managed woodland and heath.
For a practical “hike head” reference, a common, easy-to-find place to begin is Hattem’s historic center near the Dijkpoort city gate (Dijkpoort, Hattem)—a prominent landmark right by the old town and close to services (cafés, supermarkets, water). If your GPX start point is elsewhere, the nearest equivalent “anchor” landmarks in the three towns are: - Hattem: Dijkpoort / Market Square area (compact, unmistakable old-town core) - Heerde: Heerde town center around the main shopping streets and church - Hellendoorn: Hellendoorn village center near the church and local museums/attractions
By public transport (from major hubs):
- The most straightforward rail access is typically via Zwolle (major station). From Zwolle, you can usually connect by regional bus toward Hattem (often via Hattemerbroek) and get off near Hattem’s center. From there it’s a short walk to the Dijkpoort/old town.
- If you prefer starting closer to Heerde, you can often connect via Zwolle to buses that run toward Heerde and nearby villages.
Use HiiKER to confirm the exact start point and then match it to the nearest bus stop; Dutch bus routes can be frequent but vary by day/time.
By car: - Hattem is easily reached from the A28 (Zwolle area) and A50 corridors. Parking is typically available on the edges of Hattem’s center; look for signed public lots near the old town and walk in. - If you want a quieter start with simpler parking, consider beginning near Heerde (more modern town layout, generally easier parking) and still keep the loop intact.
Because this is a loop, logistics are simple: one car spot, or one bus-in/bus-out to the same town.
Hattem & the IJssel corridor (roughly the first/last 15–25 km / 9–16 mi, depending on your exact line):
Hattem is one of those compact Hanseatic-era towns where the historic core is immediately noticeable—brick streets, old gates, and a strong sense of “river trade” history. The IJssel (a Rhine distributary) shaped settlement patterns here: dikes, floodplains, and fertile farmland. You’ll likely spend time on or near dike-top paths and quiet lanes with wide skies and big views.
What to look for: - Dike engineering and floodplain landscapes: classic Dutch water management scenery. - Birdlife: in open river country, watch for geese, ducks, swans, herons, and birds of prey hovering over fields. In migration seasons, numbers can be impressive. - Wind exposure: even on calm days inland, dike sections can feel surprisingly windy—plan layers accordingly.
Heerde and the Veluwe fringe (often the “green corridor” feel, ~20–45 km / 12–28 mi of the loop):
Heerde sits near the edge of the Veluwe region—one of the Netherlands’ largest contiguous natural areas (woodland, heath, and sandy soils). Even if your loop doesn’t dive deep into the Veluwe’s core, you’ll feel the transition: more trees, more shade, and longer stretches away from towns.
What to look for: - Mixed woodland and heath remnants: pine and deciduous stands, with occasional open patches. - Wildlife: the broader Veluwe area is known for roe deer and wild boar. You’re more likely to spot deer at dawn/dusk along forest edges. Boar are usually shy; give any you see plenty of space and never approach. - Surface changes: sandy or fine gravel tracks can appear; after dry spells, sand can be tiring underfoot compared with pavement.
Toward Hellendoorn (the most “undulating” feel, though still gentle overall, ~45–75 km / 28–47 mi):
Hellendoorn lies near the Salland landscape and the **Sallandse
