“Wander wind-sculpted dunes into the shadowy Donkere Bos, pausing at Badhuiskuil’s lush wet hollow.”
You’ll be walking a classic slice of west Terschelling: low, wind-shaped dunes, damp dune slacks, and the island’s darker conifer woods—almost entirely flat underfoot (around 21 km / 13.0 mi with roughly 0 m / 0 ft of climbing), but with constant micro-undulations in the sand and plenty of exposure to coastal wind.
For a practical start point that matches the Donkere Bos + Badhuiskuil area, aim for the main beach access at West aan Zee (Badweg, West aan Zee, Terschelling) near the Paal 8 / Badweg parking area and beach facilities. (terschelling.org)
Expect a mix of: - Firm cycle paths and sandy footpaths through dunes - Needle-covered forest tracks in Donkere Bos - Wet, peaty patches in dune valleys (especially after rain or in winter)
Even with “0 m” of gain overall, sand walking can feel slower than the distance suggests. Bring windproof layers year-round; on an open island, wind is often the biggest “difficulty multiplier.”
From the West aan Zee side, you’ll quickly leave the beach atmosphere and slip into dune country. The first few kilometers (roughly 3–5 km / 1.9–3.1 mi) are typically the most open: low dune ridges, marram grass, and wide skies. In clear weather you’ll get frequent glimpses of the North Sea side, and you’ll feel the salt air immediately.
Around 6–9 km / 3.7–5.6 mi in (depending on your exact line), you’ll reach the Badhuiskuil area—one of the most distinctive “small” landmarks on this loop. It’s a restored wet dune valley with a pond and a viewpoint, and it’s also tied to Dutch nature science and restoration history: there’s a monument to Prof. Dr. Victor Westhoff (1916–2001) nearby, and the site is noted as an early proving ground for nature restoration work; Staatsbosbeheer restoration in 1989 helped rare dune-slack plants return (including species such as shoreweed and thread gentian). (terschelling.org)
What to look for here:
- A clear transition from dry dune to lush, moisture-loving vegetation
- Soggy margins and soft ground near the water (easy to step off-trail into mud if you’re not watching foot placement)
From Badhuiskuil you’ll arc inland into Donkere Bos for the middle portion of the loop (often 7–10 km / 4.3–6.2 mi of your day, depending on routing). Donkere Bos is a substantial forest north of West-Terschelling, crisscrossed by walking and cycling trails. It’s known as a strong spot for forest birds—
