Loop
“Wander through wildflower meadows and young woods, where city life quietly melts into tranquil green.”
Starting from the western edge of Amsterdam, the Bos van West via Long Way offers a gentle 7 km (about 4.3 miles) loop through the lush, flat landscapes of the city’s newest recreational forest. With virtually no elevation gain, this easy trail is perfect for walkers of all abilities, families, and those looking to escape the urban bustle without venturing far from the city center.
Getting There The trailhead is conveniently located near the entrance to the Amsterdamse Bos van West, close to the intersection of Tom Schreursweg and Osdorperweg. For those arriving by public transport, take bus 21 or tram 13 from Amsterdam Centraal Station to the Slotermeer or Osdorp area, then walk about 10 minutes west to the park entrance. Drivers can park at the Tom Schreursweg parking lot, which is free and usually has ample space.
Trail Experience and Navigation The route winds through a mosaic of meadows, young woodlands, and tranquil ponds, all part of a large-scale rewilding project that transformed former farmland into a thriving green space. The terrain is entirely flat, with well-maintained gravel and dirt paths suitable for strollers and bicycles. Navigation is straightforward, but for those wanting to track their progress or explore side trails, HiiKER provides detailed maps and GPS guidance for the entire loop.
Nature and Wildlife Expect to see a variety of birdlife, especially waterfowl such as herons, coots, and grebes around the ponds and canals. In spring and summer, wildflowers line the paths, attracting butterflies and bees. The young forest is home to rabbits and the occasional fox, while the open meadows are grazed by Highland cattle, which help maintain the biodiversity of the area. Please keep a respectful distance from the cattle and avoid feeding them.
Points of Interest About 2 km (1.2 miles) into the hike, you’ll pass the Ruige Riet, a wetland area with boardwalks and bird hides—an excellent spot for a rest and some birdwatching. Further along, the trail skirts the edge of the Sloterplas, a large urban lake popular with kayakers and anglers. The route also passes several community gardens and art installations, reflecting the area’s ongoing transformation and community involvement.
Historical Context The Bos van West is part of Amsterdam’s ambitious plan to create a “green lung” for the city’s western districts. The land was once intensively farmed polder, reclaimed from marshes in the 19th century. Over the past two decades, it has been reimagined as a public park, blending ecological restoration with recreational use. Remnants of the old polder landscape—such as drainage ditches and windbreaks—are still visible, offering a glimpse into the region’s agricultural past.
Facilities and Tips There are several picnic areas and benches along the route, as well as a café near the main entrance for refreshments. Toilets are available at the park entrance and at the Ruige Riet visitor center. Dogs are welcome but must be kept on a leash in certain areas, especially near grazing cattle. The trail is accessible year-round, though waterproof footwear is recommended after heavy rain due to occasional muddy patches.
