Getting to the Trailhead
To reach the starting point near West-Terschelling, begin by taking a ferry from Harlingen to Terschelling. Upon arrival at the Terschelling ferry terminal, you can utilize local bus services or rent a bicycle to get to the trailhead. The trail commences near the Dellewal holiday park, accessible via the Dellewal bus stop. For detailed public transport schedules, consult the 9292 app or website.
Trail Overview
Starting from the vicinity of the Dellewal holiday park, the trail leads you into the Bos van West, a serene forested area. As you meander through the woods, you'll encounter the Duinmeertje van Hee, a charming dune lake approximately 0.5 kilometers (0.3 miles) from the trailhead. This spot is ideal for a brief rest or a picnic.
Through the Dunes to the Beach
Continuing from the lake, the path ascends gently through the dunes, offering panoramic views of the island's unique topography. After about 6 kilometers (3.7 miles), you'll arrive at Strand West aan Zee, a pristine beach where you can enjoy the North Sea's refreshing breeze. This section provides an excellent opportunity to observe coastal bird species and, during certain times of the year, seals basking on the sandbanks.
Return via Van Hunnenplak
Leaving the beach, the trail loops back through a mix of dunes and forests, passing by Van Hunnenplak, a small water body nestled among the dunes. This area is rich in flora and fauna, with chances to spot wildflowers and perhaps even a roe deer. The final stretch brings you back to the starting point near the Dellewal holiday park.
Seasonal Considerations
Please note that certain sections of the trail may be closed from March 15 to August 15 to protect wildlife during the breeding season. It's advisable to check the latest information on trail accessibility before planning your hike.
