Loop
“A tapestry of misty ponds, ancient woods, and vibrant wildlife awaits on this enchanting Gelderland loop.”
Starting from the outskirts of Epe, Gelderland, the trailhead for this 14 km (about 8.7 miles) loop is easily accessible by car, with parking available near the intersection of Elburgerweg and the entrance to the Veluwe forest. For those arriving by public transport, buses from Apeldoorn or Zwolle stop at Epe Centrum, from where it’s a short walk to the trailhead.
Navigating the Route
The route is almost entirely flat, with negligible elevation gain, making it suitable for hikers of all abilities. The well-marked paths wind through a mosaic of heathland, ancient woodland, and tranquil ponds. For navigation, HiiKER provides detailed maps and GPS tracks, ensuring you stay on course through the varied landscapes.
Zeven Kolken: The Seven Ponds
Within the first 2 km (1.2 miles), you’ll encounter the Zeven Kolken, a series of mysterious, circular ponds formed by ancient peat extraction. These water bodies are now a haven for dragonflies, frogs, and waterfowl. The area is especially atmospheric in the early morning, when mist lingers over the water and the calls of birds echo through the trees.
De Valouwe: Forests and Heaths
Continuing west, the trail enters De Valouwe, a private estate with a rich history dating back to the Middle Ages. The forest here is a mix of towering pines and old oaks, interspersed with open heathland. Look out for roe deer grazing at the forest edge and listen for the drumming of woodpeckers. At around 6 km (3.7 miles), you’ll pass remnants of ancient burial mounds, silent witnesses to the area’s prehistoric past.
Immenkamp Weg: Tranquil Woodland Paths
The route turns south along Immenkamp Weg, a quiet woodland lane lined with beech trees. This section, between 8 and 11 km (5–6.8 miles), is particularly peaceful, with soft forest floor underfoot and the scent of pine in the air. In spring and early summer, wildflowers carpet the verges, attracting butterflies and bees.
Wildlife and Seasonal Highlights
Throughout the hike, keep an eye out for red squirrels, buzzards circling overhead, and—if you’re lucky—a glimpse of a fox darting through the undergrowth. The area is also known for its rich variety of fungi in autumn, adding a splash of color to the forest floor.
Practical Information
There are no significant climbs, making this route ideal for families or those seeking a leisurely day out. Sturdy walking shoes are recommended, especially after rain, as some sections can be muddy. Bring water and snacks, as facilities are limited once you leave Epe. The trail is well-suited for year-round hiking, though spring and autumn offer the most vibrant scenery.
