Loop
“Wander shifting sands, blooming heather, and ancient echoes on a sunlit loop through Wekeromse Zand.”
Begin your journey at the edge of the Wekeromse Zand, a unique inland sand drift located near the village of Wekerom, Gelderland, Netherlands. The trailhead is easily accessible by car, with parking available at the Wekeromse Zand main entrance on Vijfsprongweg, just outside Wekerom. For those using public transport, take a train to Ede-Wageningen station, then transfer to a local bus (such as line 107 or 108) toward Wekerom, alighting at the Vijfsprongweg stop, which is a short walk from the trailhead.
Sand Dunes and Heathlands
The first section of the loop, covering roughly 2 km (1.2 miles), leads you into the heart of the Wekeromse Zand. This area is one of the last active sand drifts in the Netherlands, shaped by centuries of wind and grazing. The landscape is open and expansive, with shifting sands bordered by patches of heath and scattered pine trees. Keep an eye out for the distinctive juniper bushes and the occasional Highland cattle or sheep, which help maintain the open character of the terrain. The elevation gain is negligible, with the entire loop remaining essentially flat—expect no more than a few gentle undulations.
Woodlands and Wildlife
As you continue, the trail transitions into mixed woodland after about 3 km (1.9 miles). Here, the sandy paths give way to soft forest floors lined with oak, birch, and pine. Listen for the drumming of woodpeckers and watch for roe deer, which are often seen darting through the undergrowth. In spring and summer, the forest edges are alive with butterflies and songbirds. The route is well-marked, but for added confidence, use HiiKER for navigation, as some intersections can be confusing, especially where smaller paths crisscross the main loop.
De Olde Plak and Historical Context
Around the halfway point, at approximately 4 km (2.5 miles), you’ll reach the area known as De Olde Plak. This section is notable for its historical significance: archaeological finds indicate that humans have inhabited this region since the Stone Age. Burial mounds and ancient field systems are still visible in places, offering a glimpse into the area’s prehistoric past. Interpretive signs along the route provide context about these features, making this a rewarding stop for those interested in history.
Returning to the Sand Drift
The final stretch of the loop brings you back through open heath and sand, with panoramic views across the drifting dunes. The last 2 km (1.2 miles) are especially scenic in late summer, when the heather blooms in vibrant purple. The trail is exposed in places, so bring sun protection and plenty of water, especially on warm days. The loop closes back at the main entrance, completing the 8 km (5 miles) circuit.
Facilities at the trailhead are limited, so plan accordingly. The route is suitable for families and those seeking a gentle walk, with no significant elevation gain and a well-maintained path throughout.
