Loop
“A tranquil loop weaving lakes, heath, and forest, where misty mornings and vibrant heather enchant every step.”
Starting from the vicinity of the IJzeren Man recreation area near Vught, North Brabant, the Grote IJzeren Man, Geurtsven, and Eendeven Loop offers a gentle 6 km (about 3.7 miles) circuit with virtually no elevation gain, making it accessible for hikers of all abilities. The trailhead is easily reached by car, with ample parking available at the IJzeren Man Vught parking lot (Boslaan 49, 5263 NX Vught). For those using public transport, Vught train station is approximately 2 km (1.2 miles) away, and local buses connect the station to the recreation area.
Lakes, Heath, and Forests
The route begins by skirting the shores of the Grote IJzeren Man, a large, clear lake created in the early 20th century by sand excavation for railway construction. Today, it’s a popular spot for swimming, boating, and birdwatching. The path follows well-maintained, mostly flat forest tracks and sandy trails, weaving through mixed woodland and open heath. At around 1.5 km (0.9 miles), you’ll pass Geurtsven, a tranquil fen surrounded by pine and birch trees. This area is especially atmospheric in the early morning when mist lingers over the water.
Continuing through the forest, the trail leads to Eendeven at about 3.5 km (2.2 miles). This fen is a haven for waterfowl, including grebes, herons, and ducks. The surrounding heathland bursts into color with purple heather in late summer, and the sandy soil supports a variety of wildflowers and butterflies. Keep an eye out for roe deer and foxes, which are sometimes spotted in the quieter stretches.
Navigation and Points of Interest
The loop is well-marked, but carrying a digital map on HiiKER is recommended for real-time navigation and to explore side trails or nearby points of interest. Benches and picnic spots are scattered along the route, particularly near the lakes, offering peaceful places to rest and enjoy the scenery.
Historical and Cultural Context
The region around Vught has a rich history. The IJzeren Man lake itself is a relic of the industrial era, while the surrounding forests were once part of extensive hunting grounds for Dutch nobility. Just a short detour from the trail, you’ll find reminders of World War II history, including the former site of Kamp Vught, a concentration camp now preserved as a memorial and museum.
Practical Information
The terrain is mostly sandy or packed earth, with occasional roots and low vegetation, but it remains easy underfoot throughout the year. Waterproof footwear is advisable after heavy rain, as some sections near the fens can become muddy. Dogs are welcome but should be kept on a leash in nature reserve areas. Facilities, including restrooms and a café, are available at the IJzeren Man recreation area at the start and end of the loop.
This loop is ideal for families, casual walkers, and anyone seeking a peaceful walk through varied landscapes with opportunities for wildlife spotting and a touch of local history.
