The Munsterhoek and Stempelsdijk Loop is an approximately 8-kilometer (5-mile) circular trail with minimal elevation gain, offering an easy and enjoyable hiking experience. The trailhead is located near the village of Munsterbilzen in the province of Limburg, Belgium.
Getting There
To reach the starting point by car, navigate to the intersection of Appelboomgaardstraat and Abdijstraat in Munsterbilzen, near the Medical Center St-Jozef (3740 Bilzen). Free parking is available at this location. For those using public transport, Munsterbilzen is accessible via regional bus services. The nearest bus stop is "Munsterbilzen Dorp," a short walk from the trailhead.
Trail Overview
The loop meanders through the Munsterbos nature reserve, a 400-hectare (988-acre) area that straddles the border between the Hoge Kempen and Haspengouw regions. This diverse landscape encompasses ancient oak forests, heathlands, and a network of six streams, creating a rich tapestry of natural habitats.
Key Landmarks and Natural Features
- Staatsvijvers (State Ponds): Approximately 2 kilometers (1.2 miles) into the hike, you'll encounter the Staatsvijvers, a series of ponds dating back to the early 17th century. These ponds were historically used for fish farming and now serve as a haven for marsh birds such as the bluethroat and water rail. An observation tower nearby offers panoramic views of the ponds and surrounding wetlands.
- Sint-Amor Chapel: Around the 3.5-kilometer (2.2-mile) mark, the trail passes by the Sint-Amor Chapel, constructed in 1941 using fragments of bunkers. Dedicated to Saint Amor, an 8th-century French pilgrim who settled in Munsterbilzen, the chapel resembles a miniature fortress with its round tower and loopholes.
- Castle Ruins of Jonckholt: At approximately 5 kilometers (3.1 miles), hikers will find the ruins of Jonckholt Castle. Built hastily at the onset of the Eighty Years' War, the castle was never completed beyond its current state. The marlstone foundations and four sturdy corner towers remain as a testament to its historical significance.
Flora and Fauna
The Munsterbos is home to a diverse array of plant and animal life. In the heathland areas, species such as the woodlark, tree pipit, and redstart thrive. The ponds and streams support populations of brook lamprey, a rare jawless fish indicative of clean water environments. Additionally, the area hosts 32 species of dragonflies and 31 species of butterflies, making it a vibrant spot for nature enthusiasts.
Historical Significance
The Munsterbos has a rich history, once belonging to the Abbey of Munsterbilzen. The presence of chapels like Sint-Amor and the Secret Army Chapel, built in 1947 to honor resistance fighters of World War II, reflect the area's historical depth. The castle ruins of Jonckholt and Groenendaal further add to the region's historical tapestry.
Trail Navigation and Safety
The trail is well-marked and maintained, suitable for hikers of all skill levels. However, after wet periods, some paths may become muddy; sturdy footwear is recommended. Dogs are welcome but must be kept on a leash. For navigation, the HiiKER app provides detailed maps and real-time location tracking to ensure you stay on course.
Additional Information
Facilities such as picnic benches are available along the route, offering spots to rest and enjoy the surroundings. While there are no dedicated entrance gates, information boards at the starting points provide maps and details about the area. The trail's easy terrain and rich biodiversity make it an excellent choice for a leisurely hike immersed in nature and history.
