Nestled just north of The Hague, the Meijenhof and Meijendel Loop offers a gentle 6 km (about 3.7 miles) circuit with virtually no elevation gain, making it accessible for hikers of all abilities. The trailhead is conveniently located near the main entrance of Meijendel Visitor Centre, just off Meijendelseweg, a well-known gateway to the dunes and woodlands of this region.
Getting There
For those arriving by public transport, take a train to Den Haag Centraal and transfer to bus 43 or 44 towards Wassenaar. Disembark at the “Meijendel” stop, which is a short walk from the visitor centre and the start of the loop. If driving, parking is available at the Meijendel Visitor Centre, which is signposted from the N44 highway and easy to reach from both The Hague and Wassenaar.
Trail Experience and Navigation
The loop meanders through the heart of the Meijendel Dunes, the largest interconnected dune area in South Holland. The terrain is predominantly flat, with well-maintained sandy and gravel paths, making it suitable for families, casual walkers, and those seeking a relaxed stroll. Navigation is straightforward, with clear signposts at major junctions, but for added confidence and route tracking, use HiiKER for up-to-date maps and waypoints.
Nature, Wildlife, and Landmarks
Meijendel is renowned for its rich biodiversity. Early in the hike, you’ll pass through open dune landscapes dotted with wildflowers in spring and summer. After about 1.5 km (just under a mile), the trail enters denser woodland, where you may spot roe deer, foxes, and a variety of songbirds. The area is also a haven for birdwatchers, with several observation points overlooking ponds frequented by herons, spoonbills, and sometimes even kingfishers.
At the halfway mark, the trail skirts the edge of the Meijendel Waterworks, a series of reservoirs that have supplied drinking water to The Hague since the 19th century. Interpretive signs explain the historical significance of these waterworks and their role in shaping the landscape. The nearby Pancake House, located around 3.5 km (2.2 miles) into the loop, is a popular spot for a rest and refreshment.
Historical and Cultural Highlights
The Meijendel area has a storied past, with evidence of human activity dating back to prehistoric times. During World War II, the dunes were part of the Atlantic Wall, and remnants of bunkers can still be found hidden among the vegetation. The region’s long-standing role in water management is also evident, with the waterworks and pumping stations forming an integral part of the local heritage.
Practical Tips
The entire loop is exposed in some sections, so bring sun protection on clear days. Dogs are welcome but must be kept on a leash in certain areas to protect wildlife. There are several benches and picnic spots along the route, and the visitor centre offers toilets, maps, and refreshments. The trail is open year-round, but paths can be sandy or muddy depending on recent weather.
