Loop
“Wander through whispering dunes, lush woods, and shimmering waters, where wildlife and history quietly entwine.”
Starting from the edge of Wassenaar, just north of The Hague, the Meijendel, Spaaregat and Uitzichttoren Abelentop Loop offers a gentle 8 km (about 5 miles) circuit with virtually no elevation gain, making it accessible for hikers of all abilities. The trailhead is conveniently located near the Meijendel Visitor Centre (Meijendelseweg 40, 2243 GN Wassenaar), which is easily reached by bus from The Hague Central Station—bus 43 or 44 will get you close, with a short walk to the entrance. For those arriving by car, parking is available at the visitor centre.
Dunes, Forests, and Waterways
The route winds through the heart of the Meijendel Dunes, the largest interconnected dune area in South Holland. Expect a landscape of rolling sand dunes, open grasslands, and dense pine and oak forests. The Spaaregat, a tranquil water channel, is a highlight about 2 km (1.2 miles) into the loop, where you might spot herons, cormorants, and, with luck, a roe deer grazing at the water’s edge. The area is also a haven for songbirds and butterflies, especially in spring and summer.
Uitzichttoren Abelentop and Panoramic Views
Roughly halfway through the hike, at about 4 km (2.5 miles), you’ll reach the Uitzichttoren Abelentop, a wooden observation tower. Climb the steps for sweeping views over the dunes, the North Sea in the distance, and, on clear days, the skyline of The Hague. This is a perfect spot for a break and some birdwatching—binoculars are recommended.
Historical and Environmental Significance
Meijendel has a rich history as a water catchment area, supplying drinking water to The Hague since the 19th century. Interpretive signs along the route explain the delicate balance between nature conservation and water management. The area is managed by Dunea, and you’ll see remnants of old waterworks and pumping stations, blending into the landscape.
Navigation and Trail Conditions
Paths are well-marked and mostly flat, consisting of sandy tracks and compacted gravel. After rain, some sections can be muddy, so waterproof footwear is advisable. The route is popular with cyclists and families, so expect some shared use. For navigation, HiiKER provides an accurate digital map of the loop, ensuring you stay on track and don’t miss any key points of interest.
Facilities and Practical Tips
The Meijendel Visitor Centre at the start and end of the loop offers restrooms, a café, and information about local flora and fauna. Picnic tables are scattered along the route, especially near the Spaaregat and the observation tower. Dogs are welcome but must be kept on a leash in most areas to protect wildlife. There are no significant elevation changes, making this loop suitable for children and those seeking a relaxed walk.
Public transport is reliable, with frequent buses from The Hague and Leiden. Cyclists can use the extensive bike paths that crisscross the dunes, and bike racks are available at the visitor centre. The area is open year-round, but spring and early summer are particularly beautiful, with wildflowers in bloom and migratory birds passing through.
