Point-to-Point
“Wander from whispering dunes to palace-lined avenues, where wild deer and royal history meet beneath open skies.”
Starting near Wassenaar, Netherlands, this 13 km (about 8 miles) point-to-point hike offers a gentle, flat journey with virtually no elevation gain, making it accessible for most walkers. The trailhead is easily reached by public transport: buses from The Hague or Leiden stop near Wassenaar, and for those arriving by car, parking is available at the edge of the Meijendel dunes, close to the De Klevit area.
Setting Out from De Klevit
The route begins at the edge of the Meijendel nature reserve, a vast coastal dune landscape renowned for its biodiversity and tranquil scenery. Early on, the path winds through sandy trails bordered by pine and oak, with the occasional glimpse of grazing Scottish Highland cattle or wild deer. Birdwatchers should keep an eye out for woodpeckers, buzzards, and the rare nightjar, especially in the early morning.
Abelentop and Grote Vijver
After approximately 3 km (1.9 miles), the trail reaches Abelentop, a scenic high point in the otherwise flat landscape, offering panoramic views over the dunes and towards the North Sea. This area is dotted with wildflowers in spring and summer, attracting butterflies and bees. Continuing for another 2 km (1.2 miles), the path skirts the edge of Grote Vijver, a large pond that serves as a vital water source for local wildlife. Here, you may spot herons, cormorants, and sometimes even kingfishers darting across the water.
Koekamp and Urban Transition
Around the 8 km (5 miles) mark, the trail enters Koekamp, a historic parkland on the outskirts of The Hague. Koekamp is notable for its ancient oak trees and open meadows, once used as royal hunting grounds. Interpretive signs detail the area’s history, including its role in the Dutch Golden Age and its transformation into a public green space. The transition from wild dunes to manicured parkland is striking, and benches along the way provide a chance to rest and take in the surroundings.
Final Stretch to Central Station
The last 5 km (3.1 miles) lead through the heart of The Hague, following well-marked urban paths and green corridors. The route passes several notable landmarks, including the Malieveld, a large open field often used for festivals and demonstrations, and the Royal Palace of The Hague. The hike concludes at The Hague Central Station, a major transport hub with frequent trains and trams connecting to the rest of the Netherlands.
Navigation and Preparation
The entire route is well-marked, but for added confidence, hikers are encouraged to use HiiKER for up-to-date trail maps and navigation. The flat terrain and well-maintained paths make this hike suitable for all fitness levels, though sturdy walking shoes are recommended due to occasional sandy stretches. Water fountains and cafes are available in Meijendel and near the end of the route, but carrying your own water and snacks is advisable, especially outside of summer months when facilities may have limited hours.
This hike offers a unique blend of coastal nature, Dutch history, and urban exploration, making it a rewarding day out for anyone looking to experience the diverse landscapes of South Holland.
