Loop
“A gentle Lauwersmeer loop where poplar hush gives way to wind-brushed marsh, water, and birdsong.”
This easy, almost perfectly flat loop (about 6 km / 3.7 mi with roughly 0 m / 0 ft of climbing) wanders through the quiet edge of Nationaal Park Lauwersmeer, linking the wet poplar woodland of Zomerhuisbos with open, wind-shaped marsh and water views around Pompsterplaat. Expect a mix of firm paths, short softer sections, and big skies—more about wildlife and landscape than “peaks.”
A practical place to begin is the Kwelderweg parking area, Kwelderweg 2, 9293 MG Kollumerpomp (Netherlands), right by the park access on Kwelderweg. (np-lauwersmeer.nl)
- By car: Set your destination to Kwelderweg 2, 9293 MG Kollumerpomp. From there you can pick up the signed walking routes into the Zomerhuisbos/Pompsterplaat area. (np-lauwersmeer.nl)
- By public transport: The nearest villages to aim for are Kollumerpomp, Zoutkamp, or Dokkumer Nieuwe Zijlen (all close to the Kwelderweg corridor). From those, you’ll typically need a short taxi ride or a longer walk/cycle to reach the trailhead parking on Kwelderweg.
Before you set off, open the route in HiiKER and download it for offline use—this area has lots of similar-looking dikes, reed edges, and straight tracks where it’s easy to take the “right-looking” turn and drift off-route.
Because the elevation change is negligible, the main “difficulty” comes from exposure and surface conditions: - Wind: The open water and marsh edges can be surprisingly breezy; bring a wind layer even on mild days. - Mud/soft ground: After rain, low sections near reeds and wet woodland can hold water. Waterproof shoes are helpful. - Straight-line navigation: Dike-top and access tracks can look repetitive—use HiiKER at junctions.
0.0–1.0 km (0.0–0.6 mi): Into Zomerhuisbos
From the Kwelderweg access, you ease into Zomerhuisbos, a wet woodland (often described as poplar-dominated) that feels sheltered compared with the open marsh. In spring and early summer, this is prime “listen as much as look” terrain: songbirds in the canopy and dense edges. (birdingplaces.eu)
1.0–2.0 km (0.6–1.2 mi): Viewing hill / lookout plateau area
A standout feature here is the viewing hill/plateau associated with Zomerhuisbos, giving you a raised vantage over water channels, reed beds, and the transition from forest to open wetland. It’s one of the best places on the loop to pause for scanning. (birdingplaces.eu)
2.0–4.5 km (1.2–2.8 mi): Pompsterplaat and wide wetland views
As you arc out toward Pompsterplaat, the landscape opens: reed margins, shallow waters, and big horizons typical of Lauwersmeer’s former seabed. This is where you’ll most notice weather moving across the lake and where bird activity can be constant—especially waterfowl and marsh birds. (friesland.nl)
4.5–6.0 km (2.8–3.7 mi): Return via tracks and woodland edge
The loop closes by threading back along straighter tracks toward the woodland edge and parking. The final stretch is usually easy walking, but keep an eye on HiiKER for the correct return junctions—several side tracks can tempt you away from the loop.
This corner of Lauwersmeer is widely valued for birdlife because it combines open water, salt-marsh-like vegetation, reed beds, and woodland in a compact area. (birdingplaces.eu)
Commonly noted species in and around the Zomerhuisbos viewing area include Eurasian Spoonbill, Great Cormorant, Gadwall, Common Teal, Common Kingfisher, and even **White-tailed
