Loop
“Wander through whispering pines, ancient burial mounds, and wildflower meadows on this enchanting woodland loop.”
Nestled in the heart of Overijssel, the Zwolse Bos, Tonnenberg and Maasbos Loop offers a gentle 8 km (about 5 miles) circuit with virtually no elevation gain, making it accessible for hikers of all abilities. The trailhead is conveniently located near the village of Heerde, just south of Zwolle, and is easily reached by car via the A50 motorway. For those using public transport, regular buses run from Zwolle to Heerde, with the nearest stop at Heerde, Centrum, from where it’s a short walk to the forest entrance.
Getting Started and Navigation
The loop begins at the edge of Zwolse Bos, a sprawling woodland known for its tranquil atmosphere and well-maintained paths. Hikers can use HiiKER for precise navigation, as the trail is well-marked but can intersect with other local routes. The terrain is predominantly flat, with soft forest floors and occasional sandy stretches, making it suitable for families and those seeking a relaxed outing.
Highlights of the Route
*Zwolse Bos and Tonnenberg*: The first section winds through dense pine and deciduous woodland, where the air is filled with birdsong and the scent of pine needles. At around 2 km (1.2 miles), you’ll reach Tonnenberg, a modest rise in the landscape that once served as a lookout point. While the elevation is minimal, the area is steeped in local history—during World War II, the surrounding woods were used as hiding places by resistance fighters, and remnants of old shelters can sometimes be spotted just off the main path.
*Maasbos and Wildlife*: Continuing into Maasbos, the forest opens up with patches of heathland and small clearings. This section, between 4 and 6 km (2.5–3.7 miles), is particularly rich in wildlife. Roe deer, foxes, and a variety of woodland birds are commonly seen, especially in the early morning or late afternoon. The undergrowth here is lush in spring and summer, with wildflowers and ferns carpeting the forest floor.
Landmarks and Points of Interest
At approximately 5.5 km (3.4 miles), the trail passes close to the historic Tonnenberg burial mounds, dating back to the Bronze Age. These ancient earthworks are protected, and informative signs provide insight into the region’s prehistoric past. The loop also skirts several small ponds, which attract frogs, dragonflies, and occasionally herons.
Facilities and Practical Information
There are several benches and picnic spots along the route, particularly near the Maasbos section. No dedicated restrooms are available on the trail, but facilities can be found in Heerde before or after your hike. The forest paths are generally well-drained, but after heavy rain, some sections may become muddy—waterproof footwear is recommended.
Access and Parking
For those arriving by car, parking is available at the Zwolse Bos main entrance near Eperweg, Heerde. Cyclists will find bike racks at the trailhead. Public transport users should alight at Heerde, Centrum, and follow local signs to Zwolse Bos, a walk of about 1 km (0.6 miles).
This loop is a peaceful escape into nature, offering a blend of history, wildlife, and serene woodland landscapes, all easily navigable with HiiKER.
