Loop
“A gentle Petrea loop where pine hush yields to sunlit heath and “Klein Zwitserland” ripples.”
This is a relaxed, mostly level loop of about 6 km (3.7 mi) through the Veluwe-edge landscapes around Landgoed Petrea near the village of Wapenveld (municipality of Heerde, Gelderland)—a mix of piney Veluwe forest, open sandy heath, and subtle dune-like relief. Even though the overall elevation change is minimal (plan for roughly 0–10 m / 0–33 ft of cumulative “ups and downs” depending on the exact variant), the scenery changes often enough to keep it interesting, and the paths are generally straightforward and well-used. Most walkers begin at the main access point signed for Wapenvelder Zand, which is the standard trailhead for the marked routes on Petrea.
If you’re building the route in HiiKER, set your start at “Wapenvelder Zand, Wapenveld” and confirm you’re on the 6 km red-marked loop (commonly used for the easy circuit here). (glk.nl)
You’ll be on a combination of compact forest tracks and narrower sandy paths. In dry spells, the sand can feel a little loose in places (especially where the route skirts open heath/sandy patches), while after rain you may find short muddy sections in shaded forest. Because the area is largely dry, nutrient-poor sandy ground, drainage is often decent, but puddles can linger in low spots. (topo-gps.com)
Accessibility-wise, the land manager notes a 6 km red route on the estate; surfaces are still natural, so “easy” here means low physical strain and simple gradients rather than paved paths everywhere. (glk.nl)
Early on, you’ll notice the classic Veluwe atmosphere: conifer forest (often Scots pine) with a soft needle floor, then openings where the landscape turns more heath-and-sand. One of the signature features of Petrea is that a portion of the heathland is locally nicknamed “Klein Zwitserland”—not because it’s mountainous, but because the terrain becomes pleasantly undulating and scenic compared with the surrounding lowlands. As you arc through the more open sections, look for: - Heathland edges where sunlight brings out textures in grasses, heather, and scattered shrubs. - Subtle dune-like forms (the estate includes notable sand formations; even when the hike is “flat overall,” you can still feel gentle rises and dips). (glk.nl)
Because this is a loop, you’ll typically re-enter forest again for a calm finish—often quieter, with more bird activity and less wind than the open heath.
Petrea is known for forest birdlife typical of conifers, including small songbirds and woodpeckers, and it also supports larger wildlife.
Practical cautions: - Give wildlife space—boar in particular can
