“A long, level wander from Waalre’s waters to sandy heaths—gentle on hills, demanding on endurance.”
This is a long, almost perfectly flat day out through the green fringe south of Eindhoven: village edges, quiet lanes, pine-and-birch woodland, and broad heathland where the horizon opens up and the ground turns sandy underfoot. At around 43 km / 26.7 mi with roughly 0 m / 0 ft of climbing, the challenge is less about elevation and more about time on feet, foot care, and staying fueled.
Because “Hike head: near” is incomplete, the most practical, well-known access point for a Waalre/Groote Heide loop is by Waterplas De Meeris (’t Gat van Waalre)—a major local landmark and common starting area on the Waalre side. De Meeris is the official name; “Gat van Waalre” is the nickname. (waalre.nl)
Expect a mix of: - Hard-packed cycle paths and village pavements near Waalre/Aalst (easy cruising, but repetitive impact). - Forest tracks in production woodland transitioning into more varied habitat. - Sandy heath paths across the Groote Heide/Leenderbos complex—these can be energy-sapping if dry, and messy after rain.
Even though the elevation gain is negligible, the surface variety means your pace will fluctuate. Plan your day by time, not just distance.
Waterplas De Meeris (’t Gat van Waalre) is a standout early/late landmark: a large water body created by sand extraction in the 1970s, later filling with water and becoming a popular recreation area. (waalre.nl)
Birdlife is one of the big draws here—reports for the area commonly mention waterbirds such as cormorant, tufted duck, great crested grebe, and (in season) teal. (beleefbest.nl)
As you push farther south and west into the broader Groote Heide/Leenderbos landscape, the scenery becomes more “open”: heath patches, sandy clearings, and long straight forest rides/rows that hint at the area’s forestry past. The Leenderbos/Groote Heide area is described as having started as a more typical production forest, with nature increasingly “allowed to take its course,” improving habitat variety for wildlife. (visitvalkenswaard.nl)
It’s also part of the Natura 2000 designated area Leenderbos, Groote Heide & De Plateaux, which is one reason you’ll see strong “stay on paths” messaging and habitat protection measures. (natura2000.nl)
At 43 km / 26.7 mi, treat this like a marathon-plus walk.
