Loop
“Wander through shifting sands, peaceful forests, and blooming orchards on this gentle, history-rich loop.”
Starting from the edge of Bedaf, a small village near Uden in North Brabant, the Bedafsche Uitzichttoren and Vorstenbosch Loop offers a gentle 13 km (about 8 miles) circuit with virtually no elevation gain, making it accessible for hikers of all abilities. The trailhead is conveniently located near the Bedafse Bergen, a well-known sand dune area, and is easily reached by car via the N264, with parking available at the Bedafse Bergen car park (Bedafseweg, Uden). For those using public transport, buses from Uden or Veghel stop at “Bedaf, Busstation,” a short walk from the starting point.
Trail Overview and Navigation
The route is a loop, so you’ll return to your starting point without retracing your steps. The terrain is predominantly flat, with sandy paths, forest tracks, and open heathland. Navigation is straightforward, but for added confidence and real-time tracking, HiiKER provides a reliable digital map of the loop.
Natural Highlights and Wildlife
The Bedafse Bergen is the first highlight, a unique inland dune landscape formed during the last Ice Age. The shifting sands and pine forests create a striking contrast, and the area is home to a variety of bird species, including woodpeckers and nuthatches. In spring and summer, look for wildflowers and butterflies along the heath. The trail passes through mixed woodland, where you might spot roe deer or foxes in the early morning or late afternoon.
Landmarks and Points of Interest
At approximately 2.5 km (1.5 miles), you’ll reach the Bedafsche Uitzichttoren, a wooden observation tower offering panoramic views over the dunes and surrounding countryside. This is a great spot for a break and some photos. Continuing on, the path meanders toward Vorstenbosch, a charming village with a centuries-old church and traditional Brabant farmhouses. The area around Vorstenbosch is known for its agricultural fields and orchards, especially picturesque in late spring when the fruit trees are in bloom.
Historical Context
The region has a rich history, with evidence of human settlement dating back to prehistoric times. The Bedafse Bergen itself was once a strategic lookout point, and the surrounding forests were used for timber and grazing. During World War II, the area saw activity as part of the Dutch resistance, and some local landmarks bear plaques commemorating these events.
Facilities and Practical Tips
There are several benches and picnic spots along the route, particularly near the observation tower and in Vorstenbosch. Public toilets and a small café can be found at the Bedafse Bergen car park, and there are additional refreshment options in Vorstenbosch village. The trail is well-marked, but sandy sections can be challenging after heavy rain, so sturdy footwear is recommended. Dogs are welcome but should be kept on a leash in nature reserves.
For those planning their hike, HiiKER offers downloadable maps and route details to ensure you stay on track and make the most of your day exploring this scenic and historically rich corner of North Brabant.
