Loop
“Wander through storybook woodlands, blooming meadows, and timeless estates on this enchanting Gelderland loop.”
Starting from the picturesque village of Vorden in the Dutch province of Gelderland, this 16 km (about 10 miles) circular route weaves together three scenic trails: Het Berendpad, Het Bilderspad, and the Hackfortse Enkroute. With virtually no elevation gain, this easy walk is perfect for hikers of all levels, offering a gentle immersion into the region’s lush countryside, historic estates, and tranquil woodlands.
Getting There
Vorden is easily accessible by public transport. The Vorden train station is a short walk from the trailhead, with regular services connecting to Zutphen and Winterswijk. For those arriving by car, parking is available near the station and at several spots in the village center. The trailhead is conveniently located near Kasteel Vorden, a well-known landmark and one of the area’s most striking castles.
Trail Overview and Navigation
The route is well-marked, but for added confidence, hikers should use HiiKER for up-to-date navigation and trail information. The loop combines three themed trails, each offering its own unique perspective on the region’s landscape and history.
Highlights and Landmarks
*Hackfort Estate and Woodlands* Within the first 2 km (1.2 miles), the path leads you through the grounds of Kasteel Hackfort, a stately manor surrounded by ancient trees, manicured gardens, and reflective ponds. The estate is managed by Natuurmonumenten and is renowned for its biodiversity—look out for woodpeckers, tawny owls, and, in spring, carpets of wild garlic and bluebells.
*Rural Farmland and Historic Enclosures* Continuing along the Hackfortse Enkroute, the trail meanders through open farmland and traditional Dutch hedgerows. These “enk” fields are centuries old, bordered by earth banks and hedges that once protected crops from grazing animals. At around 6 km (3.7 miles), you’ll pass several historic farmsteads, some dating back to the 18th century, offering a glimpse into the region’s agricultural heritage.
*Artistic Inspiration on Het Bilderspad* The Bilderspad section, named after the 19th-century landscape painter Johannes Warnardus Bilders, celebrates the area’s artistic legacy. Interpretive signs along the route highlight viewpoints that inspired Dutch Romantic painters. At approximately 10 km (6.2 miles), pause at the scenic overlook near the Berkel river, where you can spot herons and kingfishers along the water’s edge.
*Woodland Trails and Wildlife* The final stretch, Het Berendpad, winds through mixed woodland and heath. This area is particularly rich in birdlife, and you may encounter roe deer or foxes in the quieter sections. The forest floor is dotted with mushrooms in autumn, and the air is filled with birdsong year-round.
Practical Information
The entire route is flat, with a total elevation gain of less than 10 metres (33 feet), making it accessible for families and those seeking a leisurely day out. Surfaces are a mix of gravel paths, woodland trails, and quiet country lanes. Sturdy walking shoes are recommended, especially after rain when some sections can be muddy.
Refreshments are available in Vorden, where several cafés and bakeries offer local treats. Public toilets can be found near the train station and at Kasteel Hackfort. Dogs are welcome but should be kept on a leash, especially in nature reserves and near livestock.
For navigation and real-time updates, consult HiiKER, which provides detailed maps and trail conditions. The route is enjoyable year-round, with each season bringing its own charm—from spring wildflowers to autumn foliage.
