The trail is well-marked and accessible, making it suitable for hikers of all experience levels.

Getting There

Vorden is easily reached by public transport. The Vorden railway station is a short walk from the trailhead, with regular train services connecting to Zutphen and Winterswijk. If arriving by car, parking is available near the station and in the village center, close to the starting point at Hackfort Castle, a prominent local landmark.

Hackfort Castle and Surroundings

The route begins at Hackfort Castle, a beautifully preserved 14th-century estate surrounded by lush woodlands and manicured gardens. The castle itself, now managed by Natuurmonumenten, is a highlight of the region, with its moat, historic watermill, and stately avenues lined with ancient trees. Early in the hike, you’ll pass through the castle grounds, where spring brings carpets of wildflowers and autumn transforms the landscape into a tapestry of gold and red.

Woodlands, Meadows, and Farmland

Leaving the castle, the trail meanders through a patchwork of deciduous forests, open meadows, and traditional Dutch farmland. Expect to see grazing cattle, horses, and the occasional flock of sheep. The area is rich in birdlife, with woodpeckers, nuthatches, and buzzards commonly spotted along the route. In the quieter stretches, keep an eye out for roe deer and foxes darting through the undergrowth.

Historic Vorden and Local Villages

At around the halfway point, the loop brings you into the heart of Vorden, a charming village known for its stately homes and historic churches. The village is famous for its “Eight Castles Route,” and you’ll catch glimpses of several manor houses nestled among the trees. Cafés and bakeries in the village offer a welcome break for refreshments before continuing on the loop.

Navigating the Route

The trail is well-signposted, but for added confidence, use HiiKER to follow the route and track your progress. The terrain is mostly flat, with well-maintained paths and occasional stretches of quiet country road. Waterproof footwear is recommended in wetter months, as some sections can become muddy.

Nature and Wildlife Highlights

Throughout the hike, the landscape shifts between dense woodland and open fields, providing a habitat for a variety of wildlife. In spring and summer, wildflowers and butterflies abound, while autumn brings mushrooms and the rustle of wildlife preparing for winter.
