Hackfortse Enk Loop Route

Starting from the charming village of Vorden in the Dutch province of Gelderland, the Hackfortse Enk Loop Route is a gentle 16 km (about 10 miles) circuit with virtually no elevation gain, making it accessible for hikers of all abilities. The trailhead is conveniently located near Vorden railway station, which is easily reached by train from major cities like Zutphen and Arnhem. For those arriving by car, parking is available at the station or in the village center.

Getting Oriented and Setting Out

The route begins just steps from Vorden station, guiding you through the heart of the Achterhoek region. HiiKER is the recommended navigation tool for this loop, providing up-to-date trail maps and waypoints. The path is well-marked, but having HiiKER on your phone ensures you stay on track, especially at junctions with local farm roads and woodland paths.

Highlights Along the Route

Hackfort Castle and Estate

Within the first 2 km (1.2 miles), you’ll approach the historic Hackfort Castle, a 14th-century moated manor surrounded by lush parkland and ancient trees. The estate is a highlight of the hike, with its stately avenues, picturesque bridges, and a working watermill. The castle grounds are open to the public, and the on-site café offers a pleasant spot for a break.

Woodlands, Meadows, and Farmland

The trail meanders through a patchwork of meadows, oak and beech woodlands, and traditional Dutch farmland. Expect to see grazing sheep, horses, and the occasional herd of deer. In spring and summer, wildflowers line the ditches and hedgerows, attracting butterflies and songbirds. The flat terrain makes for easy walking, and the open landscape provides sweeping views of the countryside.

Historic Farms and Rural Heritage

Around the halfway mark, the route passes several centuries-old farmsteads, many still in operation. These traditional Saxon-style farms are characteristic of the Achterhoek and reflect the region’s agricultural history. Interpretive signs along the way offer insights into local customs and the evolution of rural life.

Nature and Wildlife

The Hackfortse Enk Loop is renowned for its biodiversity. The estate’s woodlands are home to tawny owls, woodpeckers, and red squirrels. Wetland areas near the Baakse Beek stream attract herons, kingfishers, and frogs. Early risers may spot foxes or badgers crossing the trail at dawn.

Practical Tips

The entire loop is on well-maintained paths and quiet country lanes, with no significant climbs or descents. Sturdy walking shoes are recommended, especially after rain when some sections can be muddy. There are several benches and picnic spots along the route, and Vorden village offers shops, cafés, and public restrooms at both the start and finish.

Public transport users can return to the station at the end of the loop, while drivers will find their vehicles conveniently close by. The Hackfortse Enk Loop Route is a perfect introduction to the gentle beauty and rich history of the Dutch countryside.
