“A windswept coastal loop of lakes and dunes—flat on paper, sandy underfoot, quietly demanding.”
This is a big, low-relief coastal-and-dune ultra-loop of roughly 103 km / 64 mi with essentially 0 m / 0 ft of “mountain-style” elevation gain—but don’t let the flat profile fool you: soft sand, constant micro-undulation in the dunes, and wind exposure can make it feel much longer than the numbers suggest. You’ll be linking lake-edge paths near Valkenburg (South Holland), long dune corridors through Meijendel and Berkheide (the Meijendel & Berkheide Natura 2000 dune complex), then continuing toward the Zandvoort coastal dune zone before looping back. A practical “hike head” landmark to plan around is the Stoomtrein Katwijk Leiden / Valkenburgse Meer area, around Jan Pellenbargweg 1, 2235 SP Valkenburg (ZH) (Valkenburg, municipality of Katwijk, South Holland). This is a clear, well-known anchor point with parking and easy map-matching in HiiKER. (stoomtreinkatwijkleiden.nl)
By car - Aim for Jan Pellenbargweg 1, 2235 SP Valkenburg (ZH) (near the heritage tram/steam-train museum by Valkenburgse Meer). Parking is commonly available around the attraction and lake access points. (stoomtreinkatwijkleiden.nl) - Valkenburg (ZH) sits just inland of the North Sea coast between Leiden and Katwijk; road access is straightforward from the A44 corridor (signing and exact access can vary by your chosen lakeside trailhead).
By public transport - The easiest strategy is to arrive by train to Leiden Centraal (major hub) and continue by local bus/taxi to Valkenburg (ZH), or combine train + bus to a lakeside stop depending on the day/time. - For the Zandvoort side of the loop (useful if you’re splitting the hike), Zandvoort aan Zee station is extremely close to the beach at Stationsplein 6, 2041 AG Zandvoort, with direct rail connections (notably via Haarlem/Amsterdam). (visitzandvoort.com) - Ticketing in the Netherlands is typically simple with contactless payment/OV systems on trains and much local transit, but always confirm your exact routing and last services for your date in HiiKER and the operator planners. (en.wikipedia.org)
Because this is a long loop, it helps to think in four big legs. Distances are approximate and will vary with your exact connectors and access points:
1) Valkenburgse Meer to the dune edge (about 10–18 km / 6–11 mi) You’ll start with easy-going lakeside and polder-edge walking around Valkenburgse Meer, where paths are generally smooth and fast. This area is also known for the heritage narrow-gauge tram/steam-train line that runs around the lake—an unusual landmark for a hiking route and a good “reset point” if you need a break early on. (stoomtreinkatwijkleiden.nl)
What to watch for - Shared-use paths: cyclists can be quick and quiet. - Exposed lakeside stretches: wind can be surprisingly draining even before you hit the dunes.
2) Meijendel dunes (about 20–30 km / 12–19 mi depending on your line) Meijendel is classic Dutch coastal dune country: rolling
