Out and Back
“Sea breezes, sandy paths, and sweeping dune views make this loop a vibrant coastal escape near Zandvoort.”
Starting from the edge of Zandvoort, a well-known coastal town in the Netherlands, this 11 km (about 6.8 miles) loop hike offers a flat and easy walk, perfect for those seeking a leisurely day out by the North Sea. The trailhead is conveniently located near Zandvoort aan Zee train station, making it easily accessible by public transport from Amsterdam and Haarlem—trains run frequently and the station is just a short walk from the beach. For those arriving by car, parking is available at Boulevard Barnaart or in the town center, both within easy reach of the starting point.
Strand Weg: The Coastal Experience
The route begins by heading north along the Strand Weg, a broad sandy path that hugs the coastline. The North Sea breeze and the sound of waves accompany you as you walk, with expansive views across the beach and dunes. This section is popular with both locals and visitors, especially in summer, and you’ll pass several beach pavilions where you can stop for refreshments. The sand is firm and the path is wide, making it suitable for all fitness levels and accessible for families.
Duizendmeter Weg: Through the Dunes
After approximately 3 km (1.9 miles), the trail veers inland onto the Duizendmeter Weg, a straight path that cuts through the Zuid-Kennemerland National Park’s dune landscape. Here, the scenery shifts from open beach to rolling dunes covered in marram grass, wildflowers, and scattered pine trees. The area is home to a variety of wildlife, including rabbits, foxes, and a rich array of birdlife—look out for kestrels hovering above the dunes and, if you’re lucky, the occasional herd of Scottish Highland cattle grazing in the distance.
This section is particularly tranquil, with fewer crowds and a sense of immersion in nature. The elevation remains negligible, with the highest dunes rising only a few meters above sea level, so the walk remains easy and accessible throughout.
Naturist Beach Zandvoort: A Unique Stretch
Continuing north, you’ll reach the designated naturist beach, one of the oldest and most famous in the Netherlands. This stretch is clearly marked and offers a relaxed, open atmosphere. Clothing is optional here, and the area is well-maintained, with lifeguard stations and facilities during the summer months. Even if you choose not to participate, it’s a fascinating cultural feature of the Dutch coastline.
Landmarks and Historical Notes
Zandvoort itself has a rich history as a seaside resort, dating back to the 19th century when it became a popular destination for Amsterdam’s elite. The dunes you traverse were once part of a vast coastal defense system, and remnants of World War II bunkers can still be found hidden among the grasses—keep an eye out for these concrete relics as you walk.
Navigation and Planning
The entire route is well-signposted, but for added confidence and to explore alternative paths or nearby points of interest, use HiiKER for up-to-date trail maps and navigation. The flat terrain and sandy paths mean standard walking shoes are sufficient, though waterproof footwear is recommended in wet weather. Bring sun protection, as the open beach and dunes offer little shade.
Getting There
From Amsterdam Centraal, direct trains to Zandvoort aan Zee take about 30 minutes. The station is less than 500 meters (0.3 miles) from the beach and trailhead. If driving, follow signs to Zandvoort and park at Boulevard Barnaart or the town center. Public buses also connect Zandvoort with Haarlem and other nearby towns.
This hike is ideal for those seeking a blend of coastal scenery, dune landscapes, and a touch of local culture, all within easy reach of the city.
