Loop
“Drift through endless green fields, sparkling waterways, and timeless Dutch history on this gentle countryside loop.”
Starting from the peaceful outskirts of Zegveld, this loop trail covers approximately 5 km (about 3.1 miles) with virtually no elevation gain, making it an accessible and leisurely walk for all levels. The trailhead is conveniently located near the intersection of the Oosterkanaal and the Zegveldse Uitweg, just a short distance from the heart of Zegveld village, which is easily reached by local bus from Woerden or by car with parking available near the village center.
Navigating the Route
Following the Oosterkanaal, the path meanders through quintessential Dutch polder landscape—flat, open fields bordered by narrow waterways and dotted with grazing cattle. The route is well-marked, but for added confidence and real-time navigation, HiiKER provides detailed maps and GPS guidance. The first section hugs the canal, offering tranquil water views and the chance to spot waterfowl such as herons, coots, and the occasional kingfisher.
Nature and Wildlife
As you progress, the trail leads into the Polder Panneland, a region renowned for its rich biodiversity. In spring and summer, the meadows burst with wildflowers and the air is alive with the calls of lapwings and skylarks. The ditches and reed beds are home to frogs and dragonflies, while the open skies are often patrolled by buzzards and kestrels. The flat terrain and open vistas make this an excellent route for birdwatchers and photographers.
Cultural and Historical Highlights
This area is steeped in the history of Dutch water management. The landscape you traverse is the result of centuries of land reclamation, with the Oosterkanaal itself playing a vital role in draining the surrounding polders. Along the way, you’ll pass traditional Dutch farmhouses and may glimpse historic windmills in the distance—reminders of the region’s ongoing battle with water. The village of Zegveld, dating back to the Middle Ages, retains its rural charm and is a pleasant spot to explore before or after your walk.
Getting There
For those arriving by public transport, buses from Woerden station connect directly to Zegveld, with the nearest stop just a few minutes’ walk from the trailhead. If driving, follow signs to Zegveld from the N212, and park in the village center or at designated parking areas near the Oosterkanaal. The flat, well-maintained paths are suitable for families, casual walkers, and anyone seeking a peaceful escape into the Dutch countryside.
