Loop
“Breathe in salty sea air and wander through lush parkland, where history, wildlife, and coastal charm meet.”
Starting from the edge of Vlissingen, near the Nollebos park and the De Nolle beach pavilion, this loop trail covers approximately 6 km (about 3.7 miles) with virtually no elevation gain, making it an accessible and leisurely walk for hikers of all abilities. The trailhead is easily reached by public transport, with Vlissingen’s main train station just over 1 km (0.6 miles) away—buses and local taxis can bring you directly to the Nollebos entrance, or you can park at the nearby public parking lots adjacent to the beach and park.Scenic Coastal and Woodland LandscapesThe route begins by skirting the sandy expanse of De Nolle beach, where the North Sea’s waves roll onto the shore and the salty breeze is ever-present. Early in the walk, you’ll pass the iconic De Nolle beach pavilion, a popular spot for refreshments. The trail then meanders into the Nollebos, a lush, green parkland dotted with ponds, willow trees, and grassy meadows. This area is a haven for birdlife—look for herons, coots, and the occasional kingfisher darting across the water.Historical and Natural HighlightsAs you loop through the Nollebos, you’ll notice remnants of Vlissingen’s coastal defenses, including World War II-era bunkers partially hidden among the dunes and trees. These silent sentinels are a reminder of the region’s strategic importance during the war, when the Scheldt estuary was fiercely contested. Informational signs along the way provide context about the area’s wartime history and its transformation into a recreational green space.Navigational Tips and Points of InterestThe path is well-marked and mostly flat, with a mix of paved and gravel surfaces suitable for walking, running, or cycling. HiiKER is recommended for real-time navigation and to ensure you stay on the correct loop, especially where smaller side trails branch off toward the dunes or the city outskirts. About halfway through the loop, you’ll reach a small wooden bridge crossing one of the park’s ponds—a favorite spot for local photographers, especially in spring when wildflowers bloom along the banks.Wildlife and Seasonal ChangesThroughout the year, the Nollebos is alive with wildlife. In spring and summer, expect to see butterflies and dragonflies flitting among the reeds, while autumn brings a golden canopy of leaves and the chance to spot migrating birds. The park’s open spaces are popular with families and picnickers, but quieter corners offer peaceful spots for nature observation.Access and AmenitiesRestrooms and cafes are available near the beach pavilion and at the park’s main entrance. The entire loop is stroller- and wheelchair-friendly, with benches placed at regular intervals for rest. Dogs are welcome but should be kept on a leash in busier sections. This easy, scenic loop offers a blend of coastal views, tranquil parkland, and a touch of local history, all within easy reach of Vlissingen’s city center.
